How to know if the RAVE valves are working?

Hello.

1st post, so please be gentle. :wink_old: I recently picked up my first Ski-Doo after a 20 year Hiatus from Snowmobiling and have a couple questions. Its a 2003 Rev MXZ 600 H.O. sport. It didn't run when I got it and so far I've taken the carbs out and cleaned them as well as replaced the main jets and pilots. Noticed the boots were ripped when I got in there and replaced the with some Boyesen reeds and jetted down one size to 370's per instructions. Also changed out the plugs and put a new belt on.

My question is, how can I tell if the RAVE valves are working? I took the kids 2015 Indy 600 out for a spin and yes I know its much newer, but good grief would that wax mine. He has a very noticeable powerband and I would think mine should have that as well. Mine runs out pretty strong and I'm satisfied with the power, I just like things to be right. It revs to 8k and pulls good, its just a smooth pull all the way. So that has me wondering about the RAVE valves or the DPM? Is there normally a noticeable change in power at a given RPM?

Thank you in advance and I'm sure I'll have 20 more questions. I also did a search and came up with nothing about my exact question.

Pretty easy to take them out and clean them. On my wife's 04 600ho, they were gummed in place.
As for knowing if they are working, there's a write up on modifying the cap to see when they open, but I'd say if you take them out, you'll know right away if they were working or not.

Thanks for the responses Fellas.

No, I haven't checked compression yet. Thought about it and it runs good, just more or less wondering if it's supposed to have a noticeable powerband. Probably should though.

Thanks, I'll have to look into that write up, but will probably clean them up. Trying to avoid buying that sealing gasket if I disassemble it.

I adjusted the secondary after putting a new belt on. It seems to put it down well, it just won't hang with the kids Indy. It's also 12yrs newer.

Track is great with 96 studs. Suspension definitely needs adjustment. It's to soft for me as I'm 6'3" And 300lbs. The guy I bought it from was a much smaller man. It will need risers though, the hand guards hit my knees.

With the track in the air you can look through the window of the rave valves and see if they move. I believe they should engage around 6300 rpm. Keep in mind the motor unloaded will engage them differently than when riding. You adjust them by the red cap. If you run out of adjustment stretch the springs. Max rpm should be around 8200

I was a clutch newb too. Lots of info on making some clutch spring compression tools. Easy with parts from hardware stores or premise here on dootalk.
There is a slightly stiffer spring from skidoo that raises the rpm engagement a few hundred. Hits a bit harder at take off.
Numerous you tube videos. Really helps.

Here is part 1 of 4 from Dynamo Joe on full tear down and reassembly of primary and secondary. Should be 95% the same as yours.

How many miles on the sled again? Could maybe use some new springs in both the primary and secondary. Check the primary ramps for any ridging.

Does the belt look old? Couldn't hurt to get a new one, break it in, and see what she does then. At least it's a starting point for that. For myself, I don't mind replacing wear items even if they look new. I have a ground zero so to speak.

Love the video!!! lol

Yea i'll have to put some miles on it and see how it is.

Thanks for the link, I should probably order some.

2800 miles and I have no idea. I doubt it actually. Guess i'll have to run a compression test. If I called the dealer, would they know if it has been updated? Are all the dealers tied in on a network or would I hae to find the actual dealer that did the work?

Thanks a lot fellas!!!

The dealer should be able to run the vin and see if the recall was done.

So long as a dealer did the work. If you check and there's no record of it, that isn't a guarantee that it was never done. But further inspection would be needed.
If you pull the raves, you can look in at the piston and rings. Same on other side by pulling reeds.
