Does anyone know of a warranty claim denied by Brp that was actually causes by an oil related failure? Not run dry or "I heard" of a failure, an actual claim denied.
Years ago, yes. Wifes family had oils react and turned into something like Jello.

On the other side of that, years ago I had a motor go down after the warranty. Dealer asked if I was running Doo oil - I was, they said no problem, we'll cover it.

Those were both back in the 90s. Recently I have no examples either way.

I know I am renewing an old thread but I didn't want to start another oil thread. The reason why i started looking is I have a MY 21 850 coming in the fall and I have been running Maxima Tundra oil in my sleds the last 4 seasons, and I buy it by the case so it works out to less than 30 bucks a gallon delivered to your door. The part of the specs where Ski Doo "Has" you so to speak is the SAE grade 4 requirement. I emailed Maxima and the tech told me it does not have a grade 4 rating. this has had me researchin this topic a lot over the past two weeks and as far as I can tell there aren't many oils that meet this requirement. I know for sure that four oils do because they state that they do on their technical data sheets. Amsoil Interceptor, Amsoil Dominator, Motul Snowpower full synthetic, and believe it or not Quicksilver full synthetic snowmobile oil. I have emailed tech support from other manufactures and either haven't gotten a response yet, or got answered with a direct no. the Mystic tech support person I emailed responded with they didn't even know what SAE grade 4 was, and that I should stick to the manufacturers oil for warranty purposes. Also Mystic JT4 full synthetic is not JASO FD rated its only FC rated. The oil company I am waiting for to respond is Spectro, looking at the data sheet for SYN SNO it should meet grade 4 but that's only speculation. Lastly three of the 4 oils mentioned are equivalent in price to XPS ETEC, the cheapest however is Quicksilver at roughly 30 bucks a gallon. If you feel comfortable running Quicksilver, great, other than that is there really a benefit to not running XPS? I don't like spending 50 dollars a gallon like everyone else but I am having a hard time convincing myself that there is.

^^^ Sure can. Buy it during the fall sales and its as cheap as anything else on the market.

Maybe Rushman can work out a deal with his dealer when he gets his sled.

I was stating this info for some that meeting the BRP standards isn't as easy as just running whatever brand you like specifically because chances are you aren't meeting the requirements. I have seen plenty of your posts that recommend running BRP oil for this reason. I am planning on running XPS because I can't convince myself not to. There isn't a cost savings worth not running it.

Watch your Amsoil products wording FYI. Many of their products state recommended for spec "a" rather than meets spec "a" as they like to think that they are better than the standard and do not need to test.

To be honest I think the industry as a whole is pretty disappointing when comes standards for two stroke oil, not everyone uses the same ones, so there aren't any real standards. And some of the more well known tests are related to air cooled two strokes which with modern technology does not apply. BRP/XPS is just as quirky because for years they would tell people that there is no industry standard (which looks to be true) and wouldn't submit their oil for testing nor would they tell you what was equivalent. Now they do, but it apparently to a testing standard that not many use. Makes you wonder if it's on purpose so there aren't many equivalents; or if it's a better standard for testing.

I have never understood why some people get so emotional about oil? Run whatever works for you and don't worry about it...

I just chose a different two stroke oil than you! I have used many different oils in my days of motocross and snowmobiles and have honestly had good luck with most oils I've used. Every moto race team I worked for used different oils and we never had an oil related failure.

I run Shell Advance Snow Ultra Synthetic because my buddy get me a deal when I buy a case at a time. Shell is good oil and I've never had an issue. There are dozens of good oils out there. This whole "Buy XPS" because SkiDoo says so... nah, I'm good. It is a great oil don't get me wrong, but I am already over paying for their snowmobile, their Linq accessories and their OEM parts, so I will send some of my money to another place of business.

According to this list, Mystik JT4 Full Syntetic IS JASO FD rated. Not sure the validity of it though. Did Mystik support say it was FC or FD?

Mystic JT-4 according to their technical data sheet is only FC. The tech person also confirmed that. It's strange because the semi synthetic Sea and snow from mystic is FD; also according to their technical data sheet.

I was only posting to add some information I hadn't seen in other oil threads; that is all. I know people will still run what they want; and that's ok with me. I was just adding some food for thought. I am too nervous myself to deviate even though I like the money savings; my luck has never been good at games of chance.

Rushman,

I certainly wasn't taking a shot at you... just the "oil discussions" in general. In fact, I really enjoyed your posts with all the detail. Funny to see there is oil companies who don't know what a SAE 4 rating is. Keep up the good work on that sort of investigating!

That's interesting. I've never looked at their Semi Synthetic data sheet because I run it in my 600 Carb and that motor will burn anything. I've run in no particular order Mystik JT-4, Sea & Snow Semi synthetic, Arctic Cat semi synthetic, Arctic Cat Formula 50 and Yamalube in that motor. Other than the difference in smell, it's all run just fine.

I've run Mystik JT-4 in probably 7-8 Cats now without an issue, through thousands and thousands of miles. My current sled has close to 4,500 miles on it and when we pulled the valves out at 2,500 miles they were a little dirty but nothing preventing them from functioning and cleaned up rather easily.

Final note, when it comes to cost, if played right, I can't find a better deal than Mystik. It goes on sale in the fall at the Blaine's F&F for about $18 a gallon and then Mystik runs a rebate for $8 a gallon. I can buy 6 gallons for a total cost of around $60. (Use 2 separate addresses for the rebate as its usually limit 3).

From Mystic • Recommended for use in 2-cycle snowmobile engine applications requiring API TC and JASO FC oil.

My riding group has 1 800 Cat 1 850 Skidoo 2 800 skidoo 2 800 polaris years 2015 to 2020 We are all impressed

with the oil. Every sled had clean valves at each cleaning and showed no codes for valve sticking. None in our group

has ever had an engine issue. So bottom line we trust it, if you don't need to save a couple of bucks so be it.

I've run a lot of Amsoil Interceptor in my Doo's over many years, also have run Doo's oil. There are few refineries in the US, most oils (as gas) come from the same refinery labeled with different brands. You must remember that Doo, Polaris etc make a lot of money off of their accessory and oil sales. They will push hard to coerce you to use their brand only. Bottomline, most major brand oils out there will work well in you sled. Saw some research not long ago that rated Doo's oil and Amsoil very well. I think Cat's oil also rated well. Polaris oil wasn't rated as well. For me, if I can get a good deal on Amsoil like at Fleet Farm, I'll stock up. If I get a good price on Doo's, I'll buy some of that too. I can't speak for some of the other brands but for Doo and Amsoil, they are great oils.

Amsoil and Motul both have in depth testing and analysis compared to Doo oil in E-tec machines. Amsoils test is 7 years old or so now but Motul just did their testing with gen 4 850 test sleds and used a Ski Doo oil pump to test its cold flow ability compared with XPS lubricant. If you google it you'll find it. Pretty interesting stuff if you're into that sort of thing.

Availability I think would be an issue. You can order it on line form Dennis Kirk I believe and I know a supplier near me carries other Motul oil so I could probably get it, but like XPS and Amsoil it is $50 u.s. per gallon.
