Possibly a typo on their end for the other guys info and unfortunately the typo is actually your number.

In WI, I could take the snowmobile sitting behind my neighbors house, enter the VIN on the DNR website, enter the registration numbers, pay the registration fee, and as long as it wasn't logged as stolen, it would be now in my name.

 

I had this happen in MI SOS screwed up - I bought a brand new sled and it was registerd as a different year and make. They fixed it but it took a while.

 

Yep, I bought a brand new trailer years ago, registered it, plated it with a personalize plate, never had a problem. Sold the trailer to someone in Canada. They went to transfer ownership and found out that the vin number on the trailer was different than on the title. I had to contact the manufacturer and have them straighten it out with the SOS, before he could transfer ownership

Can’t you just go online and register it back into your name? Just like the person before you did...

 

I have had the opposite issue...I sell a sled every year and a couple of them still reg in my name.. this is the problem with WI 3 year renewal issue, should be every year now since you have to buy a trail pass anyway.

Probably could but then I'd have to pay tax on it again I think, and really don't want to give the government a nickel more than I have to, they take enough ????????

 

Another shining example of why government sucks. Its probably just an honest mistake but the government will do their best to get in your way while you try and remedy the situation.......all to become "legal".

 

We purchased a new CRV for my wife, when we got the title - it was titled as a Honda Odyssey.

The dealer says everything they submitted was correct on their end.

Now the state says I have to jump thru a butch of hoops, download a form, mail in my title, and pay a filing fee to correct their mistake.

I would think the SOM would have to contact the person who registered and have them update the records with the correct vin number on "their" sled not yours. This is probably a simple error but it has real consequences to others. I am sure it will take some time to get this all sorted out.

No worries as there is no snow in the lower peninsula worth riding on and the UP is thin as well.

If you use the WI GoWild website to manage your registrations they now have an "I sold it" button to remove the old machine from your account.

 

In Ny the registrations are the title. So if Michigan only has registration, wouldn’t that be a similar thing? That makes it a lot worse of a problem as they basically would have transferred ownership.

 

I worked at a Ford dealer and we took an F150 in on trade that had originally been sold in another province. It wasn’t discovered until we sent it for an emissions test that the vin number on the paperwork didn’t match the vin number on the truck. Turns out the selling dealer screwed up and mixed up two trucks. Nobody ever checked so nobody ever knew. Kinda like two babies switched at the hospital.

 

My friend had a similiar situation..He had to take a pencil rub of the vin number on the sled to the DMV to show he had possession of the sled with that vin #..

 

Should be an easy fix down at the DMV if you have the old Registration.

No, gift the sled to yourself. Same as when I gave my dad a sled....value listed as $0.
