ICE FISHING SLED - Expedition or Skandic??

Hi everyone. I'm looking for thoughts & opinions. I'm looking to switch from my tracked ATV to a snowmobile for ice fishing. I've been a little disappointed by the ATV tracks & the mess the make & overall poor fuel economy. That being said I'm looking for a new sled to use EXCLUSIVELY for ice fishing. The items below are most important to me:

  • Performance in deep snow & slush.
  • Cold starting performance.
  • Reverse (push button).
  • Push button start.
  • Fuel Economy.
  • Two up / two seat ability.
  • Towing ability.

I already have a two renegades that I use for trail riding so this will be a one use sled, strictly ice fishing. Both of my renegades are four stroke machines (1200 & 900 ace) that have performed flawlessly. I've heard a lot of good about the 600 ace, it's reliability, ability to not overheat, etc. Overall speed is not important to me, just ability to not get stuck in slush / snow. My top speed is no more than 40-50 since I'm towing & simply don't care to go faster on the ice. Simply put, I want something that is great in snow/slush, extremely reliable and relatively comfortable. Your help is much appreciated!

Interested to know because I've asked the same exact 'wants' as far as slush, deep snow, reverse, e start, seat, etc, and also northern Wi. All I got for replies is to buy used
This is for my brother in law, so he wants new.
I know nothing about the two models in question besides one, if not both will probably fit the bill.

Absolutely the Expedition. And my first choice with be the Expedition Sport 900 ACE. We have 4 in our group that are basically used exclusively for ice fishing and they are a do it all machine. The 600 ACE would give you the speed you want, the issue becomes towing with one in deep snow and being to accelerate to get through slush. The 600 ACE just runs out of steam when it has to work real hard in slush or towing in deep powder. The Exp Sport 900 Ace will run slush all day long. If I were to make one change on the Exp Sport it would be to go to the 2 inch lugs on the track. I have a Renegade 900 Ace that I've put in a 146" T motion suspension and the 2" challenger track, and it is much better in powder than the Exp Sport's I run with that have the 154 1.5".

Expedition in any of the offered flavors is a very capable sled for ice-fishing,breaking trail, heavy slush/snow conditions (like already mentioned the 600ace is the only one does lack power vs the rest). I find the Expeditions handling is much more forgiving than the pogo (quite narrow) sleds. You give up some flotation and width but it's a very minimal difference for the added benefits the a-arm suspension provides....IMO.

I personally know and ice-fish with 14 different Expedition owners. 3 SE's, 4 Sports, 5 Extremes, 2 LE's (including all engine options available). I know these things pretty good and see them in action all the time. My Expedition Sport 600efi is supposed to be delivered tomorrow.....I bought it to complement my 850 Summit.....might even sell the Summit if it does all I need

I'd sell my Summit in a heartbeat if they came out with a Exp Sport 600r !!!

Nice sled for sure... I still want my Summit for playing in the deep. Meanwhile, the Expedition will be styling the picnic supplies (and my daughter) up the mountain.

Very nice! I can't wait to get mine!

I'll be swapping my Summit seat and low windshield onto it for playing :)

i have to disagree with the 600 ace not handling as well in slush, i own a 2020 expy sport 600 ace and i use it exclusively for ice fishing in any conditions, i was out this past weekend on lake nippissing on some of the worst slush i ever encountered towing my 3 man flip hut with all the gear plus a 6 man pop up strapped ontop (500lbs of gear easily) and i had my girlfriend riding passenger and i had absolutely no issues, the 600 and 900 are both a tractor of a snowmobile!!! I personally think the 900 is much better for the days you want to disconnect the tow bar and go for a rip, you will have more get up and go and lots power! But when it comes to slow towing mine works great and does not over heat at all! It stays within 2-3 bars on the bottom. I love the air rad feature on these sleds it makes for a complete reliable machine, no more ifs and buts with weather and conditions this thing does it all! I highly recommend the skidoo scratchers with replacement carbide tips! They are a must have for glare ice conditions

You have a great machine, but will find out that "some of the worst slush I ever encountered" and that same slush under 2 feet of snow are two different things, that is where horse power is needed, that is what RFH is saying.
