How to understand engine serial numbers?

I have 2 engines here I need to identify what model year they are. One is a 583 and the other is a 670. How do you read the serial numbers? I need to know so I can order the correct gasket kits, I just rebuilt the 583 and the kit came with the wrong MAG crank seal and I don't want it to happen again. Thanks.

The engine serial numbers are as follows:
583 - 4329983
670 - 4858770

Hey,

Are you sure the plate with the serial #s doesn't have the CC's listed? My 670 does. The only other thing you could do is pull the head off - and measure the size of the bore 76mm on the 583 and 78mm on the 670 (stock anyway). But I'm sure you already know that

lol yeah I know what the engines are, and bore x stroke is on the engine id tag. I just need to know what model year they are. They're are differences in the crank seals throughout the model years, the kit I got for the 583 had the wrong mag seal so I could only replace one. I'm sure thats gonna bite me in the rear next year when I run it. So I just want to make sure I get the right seals for the 670 and if any future rebuild of the 583 I get the right ones for that.

Alright now we're getting somewhere! by "under the base" do you mean on the bottom of the case? or under the base gasket area? If so I'd guess it'd have to be on the exhaust side? I already put the 583 back in the sled, but haven't started on the 670 yet.
