Seems to be a pretty common review by many I’ve talk to as well. How do you like the ice storm for the trails were we ride?
I originally installed it on my 2019, put 1300 or so miles on it. Transferred it to my 21, and put just shy of 2800 miles on it on that sled. I have it on my 23 now , with about 1000 miles. So its got over 5k miles on it and looks to be in great shape still. So durability is good.

Traction is loose snow on groomed trail is 10x that of any of the ice ripper / ripsaw 1 variants. I havent ridden a Ripsaw 2 so cant compare.

As far as the pre studs, its about what you'd expect. I just dont like traditional studs for the hassle they bring and potential damage ( only sled in my stable with true studs is my CK3 Mach). I dont notice a huge difference between the ice ripper 1.25 on my wifes 600x and the ice storm when its really icey in a corner, but absolutely do when there is snow on the trail.

Ultimately when this one kicks the can and decides its worn out I wont even bother to look at anything else.

IMO the only upgrade on my 23 G5 XRS 850 that stands out is the head light. I do swap out OEM track for an ice storm so the swap was easier with the new drive shaft setup. Not sure how well the splined interface will hold up over all the torsionals and constant variable loading it will see (and this is NOT the same concern as the chain issues on mountain sleds). Time will tell.
As far as steps backwards
-NVH foam around muffler
-Switch block as mentioned by many
-And thus the grip/thumb warmer

Otherwise it was no different than my 21 xrs (also owned MY17 and an MY19).
XRS must be different than a x. I had to put a new track on my 23 renegade 850x( because ice ripper fell apart again) and driveshaft was the same as the g4's

you had to pull the chaincase apart on the X to pull the driveshaft? XRS once you remove brake caliper and rotor you just slide the shaft out, dont have to open up the case.

Maybe i'll kick myself for assuming, but if you had the 1.5 Ice ripper i'm not at all surprised. Not sure why anybody spends $ to upgrade to that track. Makes no sense to even pay for a track upgrade anymore since its like 500$, better off sell the take off and buying something worth using

yes ,i had a snap ring on the end of the shaft that holds the gear on

I'm with you completely on the storm tracks. I put the regular 1.5 storm on my 600r this winter and like you said, any loose snow the thing hooks like crazy. Rides great on hardpack too, fantastic track.

The headlight is the only thing that really stands out to me as being a true upgrade over G4. Its awesome! My G5 sled was faster than my G4 and I think it had a lot to do with the 4th motor mount holding the clutch in alignment better. The switch gear is absolutely stupid but wasnt as annoying as I thought it might have been. The medium windshield with mirrors on the G5 is no where close to being as effective as the medium w/mirrors on the G4. I didnt really notice the G5 being colder than the G4? The hood removal is slightly easier on the G5.

I can remember riding my G5 on my 1st ride in Quebec and thinking to myself that if you had a nicely set up 21/22 G4 with low kms and for whatever reason, couldnt get a 23 G5, you really were not missing out on much.
The headlights are really not an upgrade. I lined up my LED equipped G4 against my buddy with his G5. One with the lights on, then the other. He was quite disappointed to see how bad his G5 was. It was significant.

Here is a video of similar results. LED equipped G4 to G5 comparison

Unfortunately, I agree with you. Was really disappointed in my g5 lights compared to my SII bulbs I had the year prior which I put into my dad’s friends sled. Big difference.

They (Powermadd) are coming in September from what I have been told via a email sent to me when I ask them. Doo is also coming out with a adjustable one also for next year.

Adjustable Windshield - Medium to High (ski-doo.com) You also have to buy the side deflectors separate then too.
The PowerMadd windshield will be the only windshield I’ll buy hopefully with good amount available. I had a adjustable windshield once and wasn’t a big fan of it.

I had 2 Powermadd, one 22 and the other 20 inch for my G4 sleds but sold the 22 inches. Just did not like looking thru it too much. But I also have a Doo adjustable and have had that windshield on 4 G4 sleds now and actually like that shield almost more than the Powermadd. Powermadd does give you great protection though. I will be looking at the Powermadd also for the G5 too along with the newer G5 adjustable from Doo when they come out with them.

Was the protection much better with the powermadd, I have the ultra high brp on expedition le and find it cold, much difference in protection between 20 and 22 powermadd. I would like to get rid of the orange gauge reflection while night riding with the ultra high

Could they make the RAS-X any less fun than it already is?????

I went back to a pre-Ras X sled and it’s night and day more fun. I really don’t feel I lost any considerable handling either. But maybe the riding I’m doing isn’t what RAS X was geared towards? I don’t know.

Most of the protection with the Powermadd is where the wind hits you right at your face, helmet. 22 is better but a little too tall for me. I am 5'10" about but short waisted and longer legs so the 20 inch fits me better. The Powermadd blows the air, wind past you more because of the style of windshield. I never liked the Doo windshield on the Expy though. Way too tall for me.
All I can say for me the Powermadd is better for protection, but the next person might like the Doo windshield. Personal choice, I guess.
