Break in procedure after rebuild

Hey just wondering what the proper break in procedure is for a rebuild on an 800 ptek engine. Installed new cylinder with cross thatching and dual ring pistons. Should I increase oil injection or just do a 100:1 mix with standard oil injection? How many hours is acceptable? Warm up and cool down are no brainers. Am I missing anything? Thanks guys

put a little shot glass of oil in extra with the gas, let er warm up and ride it like a raped ape! its the best way to seat in the rings on the new thatch

Some people like riding it like a raped ape with oil in the gas, but some people like to take it easy by going through the rpm range. It is all subject to personal opinion and you will get conflicting ideas

Start it and let it warm up. Shut it off and let it cool. Then repeat. A minimum of 2 heat cycles is the norm. Then ride it easy, vary the throttle alot with no wot for first couple hours. I have been breaking in new engines for many years and this procedure has treated Me well. I have had 4 sleds achieve 10k mi and more than 15k on My 05' sdi, without any engine failures. My $.02.

X2 on that post. MANY do the same thing where I'm from. Treat your rebuild like a brand new sled, essentially it really is...engine-wise. Let the pistons, crank and connecting rods get used to heating and cooling. If not, then it'll weaken too easily (if you go like a raped ape). Also, make sure you use brand new spark plugs and a brand new belt.

Many new sleds here also. Heat cycle and easy for 100 miles limited WOT after 50m.Extra oil in gas. My 08 800 had 150 psi comp. at 8000 miles . my 10 800 had 150 comp at 7000m .While decarbonizing cylinder looked new. Also always have run full synthetic doo oil.

Call an engine builder, what he says might be different.

Heat synch three times, third time lift track and short WOT bursts.

Fourth time some short WOT runs under its own power in the grass or snow.

As already stated you need the engine to build heat to seat the rings.

I have always varied the throttle and don't hold wide open right away for long pulls. ride the sled till its good and warmed up, maybe 30 minutes or so of riding. let sled cool until i think it will be in warm up mode when i start it. usually takes about 2 beers with both the side panels off. repeat this cycle 3 times (6 beers). then i just kinda start riding my normal style with the exception of only bumping WOT here and there. and i like to make sure i am in good snow that will keep my sled running as cool as possible.

So to all those who say take it easy, how would you break in a new Race motor? 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

Good question. I know one guy who raced on the circuit for almost 20 yrs and he believes in breaking it in hard so everything seats in good like the way it will be treated the rest of its life. He does the same with his trucks and cars too, some have lasted amazingly long. One benefit of this is you know right away if everything was done right or not because it will be really obvious if it isn't !!
Maybe Dave or Big John can chime in on this one???

I ride it like its going to be ridden. Take it easy on the trail up the hill with short full throttle blasts and blip the throttle. Once in the alpine hold it wicked for no more than 30 second pulls for the first tank with a shot of oil in the gas. Second day ride it like its been with me for years
