Has anyone tried the “quiet/trail” can from MBRP or any other mfg? Just looking to get feedback from those that have tried it. Curious if it’s worth the money, for weight savings and similar sound. I have a 22’ XRS900R. TIA

So you think all the R&D that Doo puts into their muffler system for back pressure, tone and weight distribution is a waste and you want to subtract 12-15 lbs on a 500 lb sled? 3% huh, yeah it’s going to make a huge difference…not. Have you weighed your gear? Those purdy boots? That waterproof suit? The 16 lb 2 gallon Doo tank you bought? Ever thought of riding a half full tank? That can save you 30 lbs. That trail can will definitely lighten your wallet. Go for it.

My experience with an after market exhaust:

2016 Ski Doo Euduro 600 Etec

I had a stock exhaust go bad on me. It rotted out and was going to get replaced under warranty. I did not want to stop riding while BRP looked into my claim so I picked up a MBRP Trail exhaust so I could continue to ride. The exhaust worked well and sounded fine. It was less than the snowmobile db level rating per Michigan law but it measured 2db louder than stock. I followed the Michigan regulations of distance and RPM when I tested it. and you would have a hard time telling it was an after market unless you opened the hood. I even tested the db rating 8" from the exhaust pipe and it was the same difference. I used my cell phone as a measuring device which is not a true sound meter but it was some sort of baseline.

2 things:

It had a tone that affected my right hearing while riding and I did not care for it. If I turned my head slightly to the left or right it would go away but it was annoying.
It was significantly lighter than the stock exhaust but I did not notice the weight difference at all. Maybe 15 lbs lighter than stock.

In my opinion on the 600 2 stroke it did not improve handling, speed, or power. It just allowed me to ride the sled while I waited for a replacement exhaust.
When I got my new stock exhaust I installed it and never put the aftermarket back on. Its sitting on the shelve and will only be used if I have to.

Take what you will from this single hand experience.

Stay safe

I had one on my 2014 900, and then put it on my 2016 900ace when I sold the 2014. If I could do it again, I am not sure I would. Did it sound good...absolutely! But the $$ was not worth what it provided to me. Not a turbo application, but food for thought.

I would say: if a can is the only thing you'll do to the engine, I wouldn't spend the $$. Rather put it in clutching or riding funds.

all aftermarket cans are much louder than oem

I've seen many of the aftermarket exhausts (especially MBRP) literally fall apart and that is on models that are NOT as hard on them as the 900T/900R. Often these exhausts fail mid trip and end up causing damage like melted plastics etc.

Unless one is racing, I can’t really see it being worth it just to save 10 or 12 pounds, but its your money. If some of these are truly as quiet as stock I think it would be fine. Hopefully someone with first hand knowledge will comment.

It will also depend on where you are riding. I have been stopped by police in Quebec and asked (or made - not sure lol), to open the panel to check a bone stock sled. Obviously this sled was as quiet as it should have been. If that sled had an aftermarket can, even though as quiet as stock, I would think there would have been a fine given simply due to the obvious non-stock modification. If you are in an area that enforces using a decibel meter, and if these cans are equal to stock noise, then you should be OK.

The quietest you’ll find for the 900r is the slp which is a magnaflow muffler, and it’s still very noticeably louder. I tried the ggb “trail” can for the 900 turbo/r and as soon as the opened the box it was clear it was anything but a trail can. I started it once and then sold it, massively loud and it’s listed as “trail”

I tried the MBRP race can. In my head I thought the sled was so quiet stock that it wouldn't be bad. I sold it after 1 ride. I then tried the MBRP trail can. Sounded great and was not crazy loud. I quickly melted the packing and reached out to MBRP. They refunded me and had pulled the trail can off the market due to this. I now have an SPI click and it is louder but no where near a 2 stroke or a Harley driving by my house. I think it sounds good and is much lighter, they also claim no tune is needed. I went this route because my sled is setup like a backcountry. My stock exhaust melted my side panels after doing some sidehilling in the trees. Damaged the side panel and the base panel the side panel attaches to. Fairly costly. The stock exhaust just has no room to spare if you brush up against a tree. The exhaust cost me near what the panels and decals cost.
