900R turbo performance guide

Figured it is time for a guide for those new to the 900r.

Here are my thoughts based on actual data I have:

Completely stock 900r 18.5psi is max safe boost level for 91 pump gas irregardless of whether you have a stand alone ECU or the stock ECU tuned or piggy back controllers!

Stock sled with larger injectors can support 20 to 21 psi of boost on 91 pump gas.

Stock sled with larger injectors can support 22.5psi of boost on 91 pump gas with lucas additive.

Please be careful if you are running anything that deviates higher than the aforementioned as engine damage is being done! Some are lucky and get away with it and never have full catastrophic failure but others are not so lucky, and it's not rumors I am referring too. I have first hand knowledge and it's not fun for the guys it happened too. So if you can't afford to rebuild or replace your engine be very careful. I am fortunate enough to be able to replace an engine if it fails but I have no interest in those on the edge setups. And having seen engine failures happen to people with sleds financed and with no means to fix it is maddening to see people advocate for these setups. It's not cool guys!!!

Valid point unfortunately very few individuals can afford to replace their engine in reality and most want more performance which can be had within reason if one chooses a reputable tuning company and conveys they need a safe trail tune on pump gas!

Here is a link from 2019 when I made a simular post with a guide for the 900t. It has aged pretty well since the 900t was in its infancy at the time. Hurricane Dave stated I was wrong and Ben at Turbo Dynamics also stated that I was wrong and he was making 200hp at 13.8psi of boost on the old 900t with a smaller Turbo, more restrictive exhaust etc compared to the 900r. Unfortunately the dissemination of misinformation has continued over to the 900r now!

It's a bit of an oversimplification to say above X boost isn't safe.

First off, WHY isn't it safe? Injector duty cycle above 90%? Insufficient fuel to the engine causing lean condition? Need to be specific. What is the reason it's being labelled as unsafe and what is the engine damage that is going to result from the condition.

Injector duty cycle is more a long term thing, and it'll cause problems with the injectors and possibly the driver circuits in the ECU.

Lean condition, leading to knock and elevated EGT will cause damage immediately.

I can go dig up my 1R logs and post duty cycles and target boosts, but this blanket claim is an oversimplification.

The average person is looking for a general guide which I have provided. If your setup deviates from the aforentioned and you are comfortable with that then that is great. I am just trying to help out the average guy that wants a safe trail setup and wants to educate himself on the general safe limits of the platform.

well if the hurricane ecu runs anything more than 18.5 with the stock injectors then it is running with no safety margin in the injectors so not very safe.
once a injector hits 90% duty cycle it is basically wide open...no more fuel can come out.
my stock mach z for comparison with the maxxecu and bigger injectors running 250kpa (21.5~psi) runs at around 62% duty cycle at wideopen throttle at 8200rpm and .79 lambda
And that was with VP Madditive and zero knock in the log. A very happy and safe engine!

I have first hand knowledge of the aftermath of the Hurricane ECU yes. Best case scenario some poor starting, drivability issues. Worst case scenario you are looking for an engine and that is not cool!

Hurricane to the best if my knowledge does not have an injector upgrade option available and is still concentrating on refining his stock injector tune. I am sure he will eventually get there and have a sound offering the the 900r but he rushed to market and unfortunately it did not go well IMHO!

While the Motec M130 is available through Whalen speed with John Reed Racing firmware and harness for the 900r it is important to note that Motec does not support the firmware which may or may not be an issue in the future. Also, Their core business is side by sides and support for sleds can be an issue as SxS take priority. Finally the pricing for the M130 package is a lot more expensive listing well beyond $6000.00 CAD. Availability of the Motec package is also a factor as they have been on backorder all season. In the end the Motec is still a great package but for this application there are more cost effective solutions readily available that are just as good or better.

I would agree on that friend just called last week for full motec from Whalen roughly 7500 with everything. And all components on your sled don’t work. I shipped a second turbo there to get an another’ prure built sent in September got 13 weeks ago. They are a side by side guys If u need a complete built motor great but not cheap u have to think what u want out of your sled. This is my opinion. For the first bang for buck is mcx piggy back great little kit and pretty budget Guys would be very happy second maxx third would hurrcaine or pefi. Remember this is my opinion but I have been doing this for 30years and I ride a lot and test just don’t post because u just get hammered from guys that think they no everything but really only race don’t put big miles on like I do cheers Chris

Great read , thanks for the info 68gmc, I have been watching countless YouTube videos of the can am mackerel 900r and what’s working there and coincides with the info in this post, I contacted evolution motor sports , they do the ecu operation and for 550$ . They offer ski doo 850 mods and said they plan to offer setups for the Mach in the fall . The pic is for a 550$ ecu flash the can am

injectors are cheap and safest way to run
