45 mph on flat trail locked up with no warning! Always run super unleaded with Star Tron ...
Checking plugs and compression in the a.m.- going to the dealer after that (Good thing I got the 2nd year engine warranty)
Image

UPDATE: Spoke with dealer Friday 3/18... apparantly skidoo knew about crank bearing problems on the 2010's (they went with a different supplier in 2011) the crank bearing evidently came apart and parts of it went up and took out the piston and wrecked the cylinder.
They are replacing one cylinder, 1 piston, rings, crank bearings, seals and gaskets (which are back ordered from Skidoo until March 28th) So I couldn't get a ride in last weekend because of gaskets!!

Won't know what the cost would have been until after it is put back together-will post when I know!

this season was my first year sledding and had a blast. i brought a new vector ltx, it's a really nice sled and would be fine for the type of riding i thought i was going to be doing. unfortunately it's heavy for the kind of riding we have been doing. i never really cared for the doos (2 strokes in general) but after watching them they looked like a nice riding sled and the 150# weight loss i figured would be a dream. i test rode a 600 etec 2011 MXZ X and although conditions were lousy and the sled lacked carbide i really wanted to spend more time checking them out. i was originally wanting a 600 etec GSX but changed my mind to a 600 etec MXZ X. the 600 etec was looking promising as far as oil and fuel use, i was also thinking they had the engine pretty well sorted. i know doo sells a ton of sleds and you're always gonna hear more bad news than good but i'm really starting to wonder. i already spent three times the amount of money on sledding (new sled, new trailer, all new Klim gear, etc.) i had originally planned and buying a new(er) doo is really a stretch i don't want to make if it's gonna let me down.

Hey jamesc!
Don't be afraid of buying a skidoo--this is the first problem I have ever had with my XRS and my wife has an 08 GSX 600 SDI with 5000 miles on it-she loves how light it is and it gets 16 miles to the gallon!

first off .......how many guys buy an XRS to be babied ,and then i see alot of 600's around and know of many who have them and no issues ,may be an isolated thing ,but i can tell you there is no crank problems with 600's ....................another myth

Just to clarify for BIGMIKE.....I indicated that my sled was "babied" meaning that it is very well maintained... I am not here to bash skidoo- I was simply stating what was shared with me through the technician at my dealership..(I am not sure whether it was a bulletin-but the info. was on skidoo letterhead- it indicated that there was a problem with the crank main bearings)-never said it was the crank itself or the rod bearings). I was told by the technician that Skidoo changed main bearing supplier in 2011.
I will have my sled fixed and continue to ride it next year and buy another XRS 600 in the future.

I don't believe ISOflex is the route of the problem. Doo has been using iso since the first of the Millennium and look at all the 10,000+ mile sleds going with it. The route problem lies elsewhere's. not 100% where, but it has to do with excess heat I think.

Sorry I don't post much. My Dad bought a 09 Etec and I finally rode it at the end of that year and said WOW!!!! I ordered an X pkg for the next year!!!! I have always had 800's but after riding my Dad's sled I said I got to have it. I got the happiest, trouble free, decent oil and gas consumption miles till "STOP" in town and she locked up at 15 mph. Got it started and rode it 1 mile to the bar because it sounded like a paint rattle can. The inner crank bearing seal let go and I was out of biz at 1800 miles. My dad and his other buddies had made it that year with over 6000 miles on their sleds and were shocked. This year with a half rebuilt motor I made it 2786 trouble free miles and was still happy as hell. I want to switch brands for something new but just love the Etec and the perfect flat cornering of the XP. Ya I'm stllill on the captain as I type this so sorry.
O ya my Dad is 69 yrs old and I am 39ish and Have ridden my whole life, or since I was three
End of 2011 4678 mi. going to keep it for another year

Isoflex isn't the problem in this case and neither is oil. Mine puked the mag side bearing at around 2000 miles, same situation, crank was full of oil and both bearings still had lots of grease. It is like dooman says [ the bearing came apart] The fibre part that holds the isoflex in starts to disintegrate and get sucked up between your cylinder and piston causing compression issues. Don,t confuse this with inner bearing issues or isoflex issues. Anyone with a 2010 buy xtended warranty.Repair bill 2200 plus.

exactly what doo calls for, it isn't the oil or not warming it up first or not driving it to hard or not hard enough or like Mike claims [proper maintenance] Mine was broke in properly, even after breakin I rarely held it wide open for extended periods of time, never overheated it by running in poor snow conditions, mostly lake running, it never ever flashed codes. This problem would even pass a leak test.

fromm what i have seen and heard ,bearing failures without any underlying issues would be a very rara case ,not to say it couldn't happen, but chunks of fibre causing lower compression could easily be picked up with a weekly compressionn check .Although not impossible for some engines to go from a bearing or seal failure ,i still think a 2 stroke is not for the general public anymore ...to many guys just ride and put away till next time .
Theres zero warranty on a motox bike 2 or 4 stroke for obvious reasons ,now with all the computer controlled engines, the ''i babied it'' stories ,will be just that, stories .

I had my 2009 600 etec blow up also 5500 miles thats not to mention the 2 injectors, main computer, charging relay, and fuel pump man what a piece of junk! Lucky for me I got a three year warranty. So I decided after a lot of thought to go with the 1200 I will give doo one more chance.

My 2011 Etec 800 had the same bearing race failure destroy the engine (this was the second burn-down)--so the bearing upgrade....ummm....yeah. Luckily, replaced under warranty. But I found a sure fire cure to prevent future unscheduled walks in the woods: AC F800 Pro Cross. I checked--that motor doesn't Doo this stuff.
