Hi all. My buddy wants to get into mountain riding, and has been look at FB marketplace for a reliable sled.

Anyway he found a 2008 summit 800 154 with 850 miles and "1 mile on a new top end" for $4000 obo. Not sure if it's a good deal, so that's why I'm here!!

We don't have very much experience with sleds, but that being said, we know a little bit. I have a compression tester which I plan to use when we check it out.

What I want to know is, did that sled have any major issues and will it be reliable?

All comments would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a screenshot of the ad.

I think the biggest draw back to the 2008-2010 sleds were tracks, they had the really big ports and sometimes they let snow pack up into the skid. Also that was the first year of the QRS fixed secondary, if they are lined up correctly then no problems, otherwise it might eat a belt or two. There is chance it has a Doo Dr. floating clutch on it, that was a common mod to fix a sled that was hard on belts. But the guys I rode with didnt seem to have a problem with it and they did some crazy climbs. That sled also has the PO gripper skis and alot of people raved about how good they are. If it starts easy and has high compression then it will probably be a good sled to start with.

Nice sled! There is too much to learn to put into a single reply, so I suggest following different sub-forums to get acquainted with various problems and approaches to correct them. If you pick a specific topic then I will gladly give some hints. One approach is to assume we are in Oct of 2007 and about to get our new 2008 model Summits. We would not know what problems lie ahead, but today in Oct 2022 we have gained 14 years of accumulated hindsight from not only the 800R P-TEK, but also all other models and years.
