Hey everyone!

I was interested in buying a snowmobile for the first time. Im completely new to the space, and this would be my first snowmobile season.

I was doing some research and could not find a great answer to it, so I thought I would ask here: why are there such high discounts on snowmobiles nowadays? It seems like companies like Polaris and Ski-Doo are offering pretty good discounts so Im curious if that has always been the case, or if for whatever reason these manufacturers are trying to get rid of products quickly. Are prices and product demand going to go back up in the future? Should I buy now?

Thanks in advance!

This is a situation where buyer demand is down for at least 2 years, so dealers have tons of unsold sleds and there is still too little demand. It is so bad that at least 2 manufacturers have suspended production for a while. This is partly due to the COVID money all being spent at least 2 years ago, plus a poor snow year in 2033-2024, particularly in the central US and Canada and the NE USA.

Yes, a very good time to buy. Eventually it will not be so good as now. There was a similar inventory situation 6-7 years ago.

Hey! What was the inventory situation like 6-7 years ago and how did it compare to today? How long did it take until products were full price again? I was thinking of maybe waiting until next season since its already December but Im worried products will be full price again

thank you for the reply! I guess one issue that I am concerned about is if the discounting environment persists and if I can get a better deal towards the end of the season. Is that how the industry works? Do you think discounts will continue, or are dealers finally getting rid of their old inventory? Thanks!

Hey thanks for the response! Depreciation is one other thing I am worried about. What if I buy a snowmobile today and in a few months it goes on a huge sale and I lose a lot of value? Is that something I should be worried about?

Cocaine and hookers is also an option, they make as much sense as buying a sled! All fun I hear, but in all honesty it's an awesome time to buy a new or used sled, don't try and buy at the bottom, you'll never know if you hit it until it's on the way back up. Expect to lose half the value if you keep it 3-4 seasons, but those will also be the most fun you had in those winters. Sleds are not investments, there toys and toys usually lose value over time. Then there is gear, very low end that will cost you $500, high end, $2000, can you ride from your door? Have a truck and will you need a trailer or ramp? Reg? Insurance? like to wrench? Have people to ride with? It all add's up quick. It's a total blast but it's not cheap if you want to be on modern sleds.

Not trying to be an a-hole…but…have you been living under a rock during the last year…?

The snowmobile and the entire powersport industry is struggling badly. 2023 sales were not great. 2024 sales were even worse. And some say the 2025 world wide pre-orders are only half of 2024…As a result, dealers and manufacturers have stocks full of new non-sold 2023 and 2024 models and the manufacturers have laid off loads of employees because they won’t build many 2025’s.

If you have the money and no financial worries for the coming years, now is indeed a good time to make a bargain.

This makes perfect sense, thanks! I was just curious because a ton of discounts = more supply than buyers, so if there are less buyers is it stupid for me to be a buyer? Why arent more people thinking like me and saying “hey there are so many discounts, nows a great time for me to get into the sport?”

The poster of this thread stated they were brand new to snowmobiling and had never owned a sled before. They have recieved some honest replies. Then some folks feel they need to be suspicious and accuse them of living under a rock. Seriously? Let's welcome our new friend and offer him direct feedback to his direct and honest questions.
This is an excellent time to buy a sled. Snowmobiling is probably one of THE most expensive hobbies you be involved with. Buying the sled is actually the cheap part no matter how good a "deal" you may get on the sled. That said I have been involved in sleds most of my 60 years and have loved it. Go enjoy your life the best way you see fit. Don't worry about the resale value if the alternative is staying home all winter and watch us all have the fun. Go for it.
