Ya its a thing to get the water out of your fuel tank, someone added it in and they tie it around the filler opening so you can pull it out, The other piece is your fuel line and filter lol. But i assume you knew that. O ya the last piece is your cap with gauge.
You might as well remove it and just run a bottle of Dry Gas, no need to get any extra crap (corrosion) in your fuel lines. It's up to you though.
dry gas??? never heard of it..... info?

"The other piece is your fuel line and filter lol."

where did that come from?
do i need it installed?
would that make it hard to start?
and how do i re-install the fue line/filter that was attached to the gas cap/gauge???? where does it go? inside the tank somewhere?

thanks again..
bump.....

"Dry Gas" is the brand name, it's a fuel line anti-freeze. It seperates the water from the gas so the water doesn't get into your system. It comes in a little bottle like this, available at pretty much any gas station. HIGHLY recommended.

Yes you need that fuel line connected it connects to a union that goes through the front of the gas tank, if you aren't exactly sure what you are doing i would get a service manual or bring it to a dealer it only will take a couple of minutes but you have to drain all the gas then take out the airbox, then pull the fuel line out of the tank. If that piece of line isn't installed if your going up a hill without to much gas in the tank the sleds gonna die out cause the fuel gonna move away from the fuel line. good luck

so how the hell did it come off of the inside of the gas tank?

thanks.

It looks like the string that holds that mesh tube to the fuel gauge got caught on the pick-up tube and someone pulled pretty darn hard on the cap and pulled the pick-up tube right off of the union that goes through the tank wall

Exactl what it looks like to me. When you replace it, get a new rubber seal for the through fitting. they can wear out over time and are cheap too. Better to do it now when you have the airbox out than have to tear it all down again when it starts to leak, IMO.
alright, got that taken care of.

i was also curious what the spring at the end of the hose does?
hold on the filter mesh and thats it?

oh, and my airbox comes out without any tools.
just unhook the rubber holder strap and pull out... does that sound right or should there be something else keeping it in there?

My 99 is the same way. Just pops right out.

That plastic mesh thing is a STA-DRI fuel dryer tube. They work quite well to collect water, and can be easily dried out in the summer. If you use a liquid fuel dryer such as Dry-Gas be sure to use the right type. The red bottles are usually ok, but yellow is usually not ok.

Its a water tampon, need a new one at the start of season then again half way through.
Here's a place that has them:

it's about 1/2 way down the page or so.

Not sure how long they are supposed to last, or how often you should replace them.

Friends of mine have had them in their sleds.
