please respond, my last 3 rebuilds, I did all the gaskets...!!!
AJ:
I like to replace them all but especially the base gasket. And contrary to what many on here say I ALWAYS use Loctite 518 on both sides of gasket just like it states in Doo service manual. It even shows this on parts fiche...
I have replaced all in the past, cheap and safe insurance..never used loctite though..maybe that should be a poll too!
why no loctite?

just wondering
I haven't used loctite, always install them dry. Never had any issues either.
I usually grease the gasket with white lubriplate or install dry.. .. I know you would think it would make it slip.. or move.. but they don't.. and I don't always replace the base gasket.. knock on wood.. never had a leaker..
Repalce base gasket use 518 loctite on both sides of the gasket, and 2 inner head O rings and you will be safe.

True BUT most shadetree mechanics use TOO MUCH 518 which is basically gasket remover (etches the gasket to bind it onto the metal surfaces) and the gasket fails so nearly all the speed shops will tell you do NOT use 518 and just install them DRY. For the inexperienced mechanic, installing them dry is the way to go and you'll see very few failures that way unless you're doubling up base gaskets.

Have FUN!

According to the poll-37.5% don't change the bad o'rings. Must be a trick question. I agree with dry base gaskets.
I've never used loctite either. always dry.

Dry base gasket here. usually all new top end gaskets.
If I remember correctly, I believe they told us at the doo race school to even put on the base gaskets dry.

^^^^As stated above^^^^
If you are going through all of the work to replace pistons and or rings, it generally means you have a significant amount of miles on the top end. It only makes sense to replace the base gasket and o-rings. A cheap price to pay for insurance. If, however, you are only installing a different or modified head, I might re-use the o-rings depending on their age and condition.
