The town of Webster will take up complaints of careless driving by some snowmobilers at a special meeting Thursday.

Webster's town board may pass a law limiting where snowmobilers can ride -- prohibiting operation in the town's many subdivisions. Leaders say that's where most complaints come from.

"Things like driving over people's driveways and flower beds and front yards and leaving a lot of damage," said town supervisor Ronald Nesbitt of the nature of the complaints.

Webster officials will hold a public meeting on the issue Thursday, September 28 at 5:30pm at Webster town hall. They hope to have a new law in place before the first snowfall.

well....ya..driving in people's yards is pretty obviously dumb.
The problem is that sledders are trying to get to the trails from their house &... there are sections of trail that require you to run the side of the road to get to one field to another. Unfortunatley you have people that get up into the lawn & throttle down with only 5 inches on the ground. You have a few in every crowd that ruins it for the rest.

I used to live in Webster back in the '70s. Bought my first sled, an Alaska Ski 340, for $75.00. I lived in the Village off Dunning Ave. so I had to ride the snow banks to get to the fields. Went though a lot of wear bars.

At that time the village was open to snowmobiling if the conditions were right. I never rode through any yards and that sled could barely get past 40 mph. However, there were others in town with much newer, more capable machines that would tear through the streets like maniacks.

Many of the fields in the area have become developed so I would imagine it's much more dificult getting to a ridable area. I was a teen then with limited resources (ie $75 bucks for a whole sled) so trailering wasn't an option. I would guess that many of those that do ride the roads today are also kids. Maybe they're the kids of those maniacks of the '70s.
