Voltage Regulators going bad

641 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  bpickl
I have a 81 blizzard mx 5500, been fixinig it up and almost done but I can't figure this out. My voltage regulator goes bad after about half and hour, so the sled runs fine but then my lights blow out cause the volatage is spiking all over the place.

I have checked all my wiring, connections etc. Gone through two regulators. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem or has any idea what would be wrong?

I would suspect a wiring problem, mixed wires ,but where exactly,i dont know.I cant imagine why a voltage regulator will burn this often. The wires going to the reg. should be yellow and yellow/black coming from the lighting coil.If you find the problem, post it ,it will interesting to know.
Sounds like your engine is putting out to much voltage for the voltage regulator. Mine spit's out 45 volts into the regulator before converting down to 12 volts. Hint the reason i went though 3 of them.
This is a knowen problem with older ski doos, After so many years the coils start breaking down. Mine had started to melt and shorted out half the coil Causing less resistance and bring the voltage up...WAY UP. i say check you internal lighting coil. You might be surpised

Keep us posted. i'm intrested in hearing the results. As i have work wiring systems on bikes and ski doos
