Hey Doo Talk Members.....great site that was huge help in researching my first Ski Doo purchase ever...a 2016 BC X 800.

Winter can not come soon enough now!

A "must have" critera for me was cold start ability (with both manual and electric options) and there were mixed posts on 800 etecs/cold weather starting abilties. I debated 1200/900 vs 800/600 etec till I got a headache and went with the max power/lighter weight option right or wrong......

Obviously any sled in going to have challenges at those temps. As a referance I am leaving a 08 Cat F10 /manual only start that at -36 C was nasty to pull over but always eventually started.

A friend has a 2015 FR 800 etec and said this winter he had a -40 morning in Feb and his 800 started right away with one push of the "go" button (he had the ecu reflash done). Two guys rode up to my camp site after I ordered the new sled on 2015 XRS `s and when asked they said they both had trouble below -28C starting. I asked did they not start or not turn over? "Not turn over" was the responce. That can be solved by a better CCA rated battery (ThrottleX ADX20HL-BS 310CCA etc) or manual start kit or both to be safe.

My sales guy told me that for 2016 the 800 etec starter part number has been superceeded with a "new one" that is "improved". I have not heard of a lot of issues with 800 etec starters failing so maybe its a stronger design like the Mean Green starter I put on my Cummins for better cold temps torque.

Anybody heard this as Ski Doo parts guys do not seem to have any knowlegde of a updated 2016 800 starter with no 2016 parts books out yet.

Did I get told what I wanted to hear or is this possibly true? If so might be a upgrade for older gen 800`s in colder climates.

Living in Northern Manitoba it gets pretty damn cold here in the middle of winter. I've got E-start and never once had a problem starting in temperatures consistently down to -35C. Started up like a charm every time.

I looked up the stock 2015 BC factory battery cca rating and I thought it was 270 CCA but it looks to be 310CCA stock. The best Ski Doo replacement battery in the 2016 parts catalog is rated at 385CCA so if you need more cold cranking amps the better battery might help when replacment is needed.

I did ask the sales guy again yesterday in looking at helmets at St Onge if I heard him correctly and he said the same thing....new 800 starter part number superceeding the old one and its been "improved" and is more "efficient". Either he is full of it or they may be a newer version on the 2016`s as he said.

Good to hear of those -35 starts on the 800`s.

I owned a 13 800 etec for 3 years and my primary riding buddy owned an 800 etec for 2 years. Both pull start

They never...ever...started after being left outside in colder than -28c. We both got stranded in cooke city one morning after a lot of powder the day before. Only -17c. Had to get the boys on Polari to go to town and buy us each a fresh plug. We replaced it and they both finally fired after 15 hard pulls.

Under cold conditions they take he-men to pull and if you dont pull hard enough and get it within 3 or 4 pulls it floods.

Skidoo's recoil is a major major design flaw. It is a longazz pull (like rip your rotator cuff long) and it only fires on the last part of the pull. So when cold its waaay too hard. And a slow pull wont generate enough amps to fire the coil or whatever. So then it floods.

Im mad again now typing this. The first thing Skidoo should have done is leave a sled out in -35 and ask a 110lb woman to start it in 3 pulls. When she failed to even turn the engine twice (mostly cause her arms arent long enough) it should have been back to the drawing board

I got e start on my incoming 16. If all else fails i can at least boost and pull at the same time.

Seriously...by the time my buddy totalled his sled this spring he was planning his whole wknds around where he was going to overnight the etec so it would start in the morning.

Polaris is a quick short pull with a good placement on the sled. Recoil must have a better mechanical advantage or something cause its way easier to pull.

Also Skidoo recoils just suddenly stop recoiling. On 5 month old sleds. On top of an effing mountain.

^^^ That really made me mad last winter!!! I took mine appart and removed a bunch of the molykote grease they had plastered in there. Sprayed a bit of seafoam to loosen up the remaining grease and now it works great. I couldn't believe how something only 2 months old was already acting up especially considering it was probably only the 10th time using the recoil.
