Hi guys thanks yes I've been reading many different threads on tundra modifications.

TASKY, the rail extensions you mentiones aRe they not sold new anymore?

I really dont know if they are still made or not. I found mine on Ebay as did Tundra Man. The extensions were made by Western Power Sports, part number 44-1529 It might take some time to find a set now that summer is on the way. Do a google search on mountain sleds. There are a lot of custom builders making products like these. Western Power Sports may be still around.

I just sent you a pm

I had these made several years ago for another project. Seeing how the original Tundra steel skiis needed some work I pulled these out of the rafters for this project instead. They are Powder Pro SLP skiis with some big carbides. The Carbide mounting studs go through the skiis and then the bracket holding the pieces together. The ski brackets where patterned after a vintage Arctic Cat ski. The stock mono leafs where to long so I used a NOS pair of 72 John Deere multi leafs. I had to use the Ski-Doo spring saddle and simply changed these out from the John Deere leaf pack.

Just a quick comparison there does not seem to be much in the line of weight savings. Advantages hopefully will be more precise steering, less drag (friction) and some more flotation from the added width.

I had my machinist turn me down some pipe stock for lower shock mounts.

I also found time to test fit the axle relocation kit moving the big wheels inboard.

I had intended to go with some plastic wheels but a quick search on eBay netted me these wheels $32 shipped total price for the pair. Money ahead I thought. They showed up with the wrong width bearings. Uhhg!!! Sourced bearings locally $53 a piece. Spending a dollar to save a nickel. Nice wheels anyway. I believe them to be off of a Blade Revolt maybe.

Next upgrade will be to the rear arm of the suspension. I am going to update it to a rear scissors type arm. I plan on mixing Tundra II springs and shock with 2006 Tundra 300F rear torque arm. My goal here is a little more suspension, gain some height and distance the top of the track from the back of the sled.

I am open to ideas here so feel free to share.

Hi Tasky,

You are ahead of me. As you know all I did to solve the track versus hull problem was to add the drop down brackets. I have not had any contact between the track and hull.

Hi Tasky,

Have you had enough snow to ride your sled yet this winter? If so, did you encounter any problems/

Hey Tasky,

How is your project coming along. Have you had enough snow to enjoy your efforts yet? What size wheels did you go with on the axle kit?

I did have plans to drop the track using a Tundra 2 style rear arm. I even went as far as to purchase a complete arm setup from a local yard Thanksgiving 2015. I had some time in the Spring 2016 and had anticipated handling the conversion then but I could not find where the arm had went to. 2017 I have spent over a month on and off looking for that rascal 2 large garages, semi trailer, storage container, in and out of cars and trucks upstairs and downstairs, over and under you get the idea, kind of like a Dr. Suess book . The problem is I put it someplace special that I wouldn't forget.

The only problems I have had with my track and clearance issues are the way I have adjusted the track tension or the weight bias to the skis. I had the track really loose hoping to find where and when b550's sprockets would skip. When I would go down a hill or let off after acceleration the track would rub on something due to centrifugal force not because of the sprockets they have proven to be a bullet proof addition. I tightened the track tension and this problem was solved.

I have the suspension set up very loose in the front, low ski pressure. I am hoping for big powder (fingers crossed). This has left the sled with very poor trail manners at speed. I tend to stay off of trails and lots of time going slow in the woods preferring to steer with body weight instead of steering. I will find a happy medium at some point.

When I find my Tundra 2 arm I will be adding it to my suspension along with the 8 inch rear idlers that you are running instead of the 9 inchers I have on it now. Other thoughts I have had is maybe a neutral weight balance between the front and rear of the sled. I.E. 50 % of the weight in the front and 50 % toward the rear. Wonder where an Elan falls on this balance issue? What is the perfect attack angle of a track? I weigh around 230 and usually don't carry anything with me for gear on the sled.

Always thinking about stuff like this and never really come up with a carved in stone answer.

I was just curious enough to buy a hanging scale and weigh the machine. It weighs 385 lbs wet. Any weight losses are hard to come by. It sounds heavy but then again I feel it has reached a balance with its flotation / traction. I was thinking of lightening it up some but the easy items for removal are things that I like ie rear rack. The height it provides is perfect for lifting the rear of the machine when it needs a little persuasion and of course carrying things.

here is a picture of how loose the track is and no slipping or sprocket ratcheting to date
