What are you guys doing for 2 ply track stud lengths and layouts? Mainly aggressive riding on groomed/ hardpack and icy trails w/ 129" 850

Switched out stock track for a 1.25" Ripsaw 2 to specifically stud outside belts. Thinking of using 1.375" or 1.50" length with single stud every 3rd lug on both outside belts for 15 studs ea/side and (1) double backer/stud for each center lug for 90 total studs in center totaling 120 studs.

I know some are running considerably more but trying to strike balance for tight woods riding.

Need some cold and snow!

1.45 woodys up the center, 1.325 on the outside. That combo works for fast trail.
Stud boy 1.5 on ice or more drag set up.
4 per bar is nessacery.
Mixed doubles and singles for me, tons of scratch lines. Avoid the center 1" or so, front protector location.
Meat Head I am in same school of thought on lengths with 4 per bar and have done similar in past with slightly shorter studs on outside with what I thought was good results. Do you have pick of your track layout?

By the way, Stud Boy has a Heavy Duty Template made only for a RipSaw 2. It fits very tight and helps get the backers (Holes) square every time. It still takes time and attention to detail. The Backers are tricky untill you get good feel for them . Warm soapy water soaking the backers. I used Dawn Dish Soap as lube at install, with it on the stud and q-tip soap into the backer holes. You have to sneak up on the final torque. I used a long 1/4 drive rachet and slow an deliberate motion to finish. The backers will strip out in not carefull!
Good Luck!

I agree I have bent a lot of aluminum but never broken any. But I also go over my sled after every ride and I wasn’t missing any studs or having them very loose. Just some backers cracked. I personally think it was due to the soft lugs of the storm 150 track folding right over and the backers catching hard on the ground early season before we had a good base.

definitely looks like it caught something with the stud and backer on this side.

I haven’t broken any in my 2020 and that sled has been ran way harder in marginal conditions than my 21. Have you ever tried them Meat Head?

Thinking of installing standard alum backers, had the Stu Bot Pro Lite plastic backers on a 2015 800 X-RS with good results, they really hooked up in hard pack and don't recall breaking any but going to KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) it this time.

Going to start with 90 (2/lug) 1.450" up center belt and 15 (1 every 3rd lug for 30 total) on each outside track belt . This will give me 120 total. Had similar setup with 90 in center and 22 on each outside belt (all 1.325") on a 2018 X-RS and felt outside belts had a little too much bite when things get tight/twisty northern WI groomed trails.

So are you 2 ply guys running the smaller 2 ply studs and backers? I talked to 2 different stud manufactures tech support guys, and got 2 different responses. 1 tech said he see's lots of guys running the larger 1 ply stud/backers on 2 ply tracks when studding lighter for added support. Other more conservative tech support said not to doo this as the single and double ply studs have different shoulder heights where the stud backer seats.
