I know a lot of guys drop a tooth or two on the top gear. My buddy did it on his 600sdi and its great. I am wondering how it works out for the 500ss. I have an 08' stock 500ss. Does this motor have enough torque to make this advisable? If it does work out, this should punch up the midrange?

I've got an 09 500SS and I dropped 2 teeth on the upper sprocket. I highly reccommend it. Even works with my stock 1" track.

The 500ss motor will easily handle going down 1 tooth. Think of things in terms of ratios though. 22(top) /43(bottom) for example, is a 1.95.

So on an 2008 500ss has a 23 tooth top gear? A 22 tooth puts me at 1.95 and 21 puts me at 2.05. Any issues with chain tension going down 2 teeth?

What does this do to the topend speed?
You will lose a little off the top.

I dropped a tooth on my 500SS when I added a 136 x 16 x 1.25 track. Was a nice, cheap mod that really perked up the hole shot.

The 500SS motor is no slouch. Remember, it was the bullet proof series III 600 motor before doo intro'd the HO600. It's HP is only slightly less than the 600HO.

I've got a 22T top gear for sale in the sled parts classifieds that would work.

08 500ss stock gearing is 25-45. With stock track, 2 teeth down will result in way too much spinning and a slower sled, unless you are 220lb+. Just my experience.

What about dropping 1 tooth on top, but coming up 1 tooth on the bottom? So your end result would be 24/46. Along with a track upgrade of course.

Stock was 25/45
I changed mine out this year to a 23/45 and have a Cobra 1.375 track. Was able to pickup a 23 tooth & a 24 tooth @ Haydays for $15 per gear. Had a 24/45 in it before BJ's 640 kit went into it then went back to 25/45.
Now I am going to see what a 23/45 does. It would wheelie before @ 25/45, now it might wheelie even more. If I do not like the 23 I will swap a 24 back into the sled.
