Is it the 2004 REV 800X in your profile? Just checking since many have more than one sled.

I never had trouble with the speedometer, so all I can do is quote the Shop Manual. Others will have better suggestions.

The speedometer is lighted but the needle does not move

Check the speed sensor and the wiring harness.

If the speed sensor and the wiring harness are
good, change the speedometer.

SPEED SENSOR

Install the supply harness (P/N 529 035 869) with
the supply cable (P/N 529 035 997).

NOTE: Remove the headlight system fuse to save
the battery during the test.

Static Test

Unplug the speed sensor connector.

Using the multimeter FLUKE 111 (P/N 529 035
868), measure the voltage between BLACK/BLUE
and RED/GREY wires. The obtained value should
be the battery voltage.

Measure the voltage between BLACK/BLUE and
GREEN/WHITE wires. The obtained value should
be ±1 volt under battery voltage.

Dynamic Test

Install 3 pins in each speed sensor connector.

Install wire jumpers between pins.

Lift the rear of the vehicle.

Connect multimeter probe on GREEN/WHITE and
BLACK/BLUE wires.

Turn the track slowly. The voltage should be 12
volts then drop to O.L.

If the obtained value is out of specifications,
change it.

Ooops, wrong gauge, sorry.

Shop Manual should have troubleshooting. Do you have a manual? If not someone will give you one. Got to go.

Here is what I found from pages 66 and 328. You can do a search in the document for tachometer, or enter those pages numbers in the Adobe Reader page box in the toolbar. Whichever is easier. Page 328 is the important one that shows the pictures of the connector to check.

TACHOMETER DOES NOT WORK.

1. Check continuity of wires.
a. Corroded terminals and/or broken wires.
Replace terminal(s) or crimp defective wires.

2. Check tachometer part number.
a. Models with 360 W magneto have a different tachometer.
Replace with appropriate one.

TACHOMETER

No light but the needle moves

The tachometer is supplied through the
speedometer. Check the voltage between pins 9
and 10 of speedometer.

The obtained value should be the battery voltage.

If not, check connections and wiring harness.

If the voltage is good, replace the tachometer.

The needle does not move

No lights, see speedometer

With lights, check RPM signal on pin 7.

Crazy needle

Check wire connections on pin 18, 19, 20 and 21.
