Snowblower engine problem

301 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  drmayer
I've got a TORO snowblower with a 6hp Tecumseh engine. I filled it with gas yesterday, started it, and a few seconds later gas started spewing out of the primer bulb (the little hole in the middle of it). I shut it off, and gas was continuing to leak out of the primer bulb until i switched off the fuel at the tank.

Any thoughts? Someone mentioned the float in the carb. I did take that apart and made sure nothing was gummed up or anything and it looked fine.

thanks for your help.

It sounds like the float may be stuck in the open position to me as well. The float is connected to a pin that opens and closes a valve to allow gas to enter the carb. What is probably happening is there is some varnish or debris that is causing that pin to stick. I would suggest removing the carb - taking apart each individual part, jet, etc. and cleaning them with some good carb cleaner. Let them soak for hours. I always like to buy new jets because sometimes theya re hard to get 100% cleaned ( they are cheap too)
-Good luck
Thanks for the reply. When i had the float bowl off, i moved the float up and down and the pin appeared to be moving fine. I'll take it apart again and clean everything with carb cleaner.
Next time you have it off blow in the fuel line while you push up lightly on the float. That way you can tell if the needle is actually seating correctly.

The needle and seat do wear out!

Other than that, just a tiny spec of anything will cause it not to seat fully and leak.
I didnt think there was supposed to be a hole in the primer bulb?

Just looked at the one on my pressure washer.......NO hole in the primer bulb.....just a little round mark where they molded it.

I didnt think so either, but ive had some old beater lawnmowers that had a pinhole in them and they worked fine except for the odd ocassion when they would spray fuel.
My new craftsman 6.25hp pushmower has a hole in the primer bulb. Hasn't ever leaked.

The needle and seat do often need to be replaced depending on how worn they get. If your bowl is hollow(some older ones are cork) on the inside they can sometimes crack and let gas fill up the inside which in turn keeps it in one postion. Keep in mind that a primer bulb can be more than just the bulb itself so you may want to have a closer look at it.
Got this taken care of. $42=new carb = problem gone.
