the culprit is the pseudoephedrine. that is a decongestant you buy as Sudafed. Also in cough syrups that add a "D" for decongestant, like Benilyn DMD

(if you add an E that is for expectorant, like a DM-DE syrup)

so yes, the pseudoephedrine is a big problem because it is quite easy (although a danger for explosion) to "cook" crystal meth with that and iodine crystals, red phosphorous, coleman fuel, muriatic acid and some acetone.

and yes it is unbelievable addictive and rehabbing these people is really, really hard.

Unfortunately, Missouri has the highest meth abuse rate per capita in the U.S. The rural states are particularly vulnerable due to the availibility of anhydrous ammonia, a key ingredient required to manufacture the drug. The AM is used in farming applications. This deadly drug had its beginning, in the U.S. in the rural western part of the country. It's slowly made it east. Believe me, this is just the start. I lived in N.D. and there were old farm houses they busted daily. The drug stores there put ALL the ingredients needed from the store under lock and key. While I'm on my soap box, kids just ONE TIME is all it takes to become addicted. According to MSNBC, numerous doctors agree this is the WORST drug ever to hit the streets. Successful rehabilitation rates are very low.

BTW I got this info from a special on MSNBC. Sorry to hog the thread, felt like it was important to bring up.
