RWD and towing in Snow

I need a new vehicle and like the Dodge Magnum. I'm debating over the R/T AWD or go for the big SRT-8 RWD. Of course I want the power and RWD fun of the SRT for 8 months of the year, but I also need to two a double trailer in Ontario winters. WIth a rear good set of snow tires on it, how do you feel it will tow in the winter?

Anyone else towing with RWD vehicles in the snow?

with the power of the SRT 8 and RWD, good luck.
you might as well put ice skates on back.
I have used conversion vans before , very rarely did I have much of a problem. I have gotten stuck towing w/ my 4wd Suburban , 8 inches of wet snow on top of ice at the cabin . I left the trailer till it melted some weeks later.
If you are only planning to have one vehicle get the awd, forget the srt8 it will be useless in snow on it's own let alone with a trailer. Otherwise find a cheap 4wd pickup for winter and keep the srt8 as a summer only car (this may sound expensive but think of the road salt on that new car.....). You only need liability insurance on a junker.
Actually the new RWD's, with traction control, are a whole new breed. I'm not saying if it would be good towing or not, as I don't have any experience with them, but I do know they sure aren't the RWD's of yesteryear. But, if I only had one to buy, the practical side of me would probably opt for the AWD - with a HEMI, of course.
The SRT8 will be USELESS in snow for 1 single reason.........the rear tires are super-fat. If you put skinny tires on the rear it would be JUST FINE, but its made for handling on the bare pavement so they gave it a wide footprint. Wide tires mean LESS pressure per square inch of road contact and that means LESS traction.

Just be aware of this, because its the the way tires are in snow.
Windsurfnut.....

My wife's got an R/T Magnum Hemi. It is friggin' HORRIBLE in the snow. The SRT8 would be in all likelyhood the WORST vehicle for the snow.

She wished she got the AWD Hemi....but it wasn't quite available back when she got the car. At least it the AWD would navigate with some confidence. Navigate is a very "loose" description.

Other than that the Magnum is awesome. Don't think I'd tow with it either. Your asking for trouble.

Get the car & a beater 4X4.

I agree with Mattie...and don't forget to put a good set of winter tires on your tow vehicle, even if it is a 4X4 beater or AWD, whatever.
Like everybody is saying, if only one vehicle is in question, AWD HEMI is the best thing since sliced bread. but if two vehicle can be purchased, the SRT-8 and beater would be the way i go. we have an AWD 300C HEMI and its better in the snow than our 4X4 trucks. Good luck with your purchase(s).
well if your hauling the sled IN it maybe...
burn outs with trailers behind trucks are cool tho!!
That hemi got a trailer towing package? ....wait, that's not how it goes!?!
id say buy the srt-8 and like someone else said by a cheap 4x4 truck to pull with so you dont 1) ruin the car 2) so you can pull and nit be all over the place pulling
Are you crazy??? My buddy has a VW Jetta with traction control on it... He puts new snows on every winter.. We were in killington Vt on a ski trip with it last year and we got like 6" of snow in a couple hours.. Let me say, all the traction control does is suck power to keep the tires from spinning.. What a joke that is, the car wouldn't go up any hills with the traction control on, it would suck so much power and it would still spin... We eventually just shut it off and went WFO up every hill spinning the pis out of the tires to make it back to the hotel...

Have you ever towed in the snow?? I've seen guys with enclosed get stuck trying to pull with 3/4 ton trucks, it is a whole other game.. A car would suck towing on dry roads let alone with any snow at all..

You must be crazy for even thinking it would... Have you ever driven in the snow (j/w)??

Also... the LX cars are unibody... not exactly the best soloution for towing.
why do they make 2 wheel driver pick ups??

for those that cannot afford the 4x4...

that and the 2wd have higher payload capacities since the springs dont have to carry the wieght of the 4wd parts.

If your north of the 40th your better off with the 4x4 / AWD...
Less maintainance costs for 2wd , better mpg. Keeps fleet costs down . I haven't called a tow truck for a stuck vehicle yet . I just jinked myself ,boy are we gonna get some snow !
