radar detectors are legal in new york on vehicles. not sure about snowmobiles, besides if your going that fast on a sled you wont be able to hear or see the detector go off.

They are legal in NY. I have one on my bike and in my car. Get a good one though, cheap ones are a waste. I have a Escort X50. Haven't gotten a ticket since.

It really doesn't matter if you have a detector or not actually...Yes, you will warned of a cop up ahead, but most cops and DEC up there have Checkpoints, so you have to stop there anyway...Its not like the radar detector is going to prevent you from stopping...Also, its not like the cops up there hide in the woods on the sleds, like they do on the highway...

radar can be heard on the sled. iv'e had one on my bike for the last four years.

iv'e seen fish cops hiding in the woods with radar in nh.

the problem i see is there using laser, which is hard to detect unless your the one being targeted in which case it would be too late. unless you locked up the track and turned around.

iv'e only seen them (last weekend) once on trails in vt, it was a saturday morning in a high traffic area. it's an area where i would be/was slowing down any ways. if i start to see thins kinda stuff on fridays, it will be time start sleeping all day and riding all night.

sounds like it time to use some of the bike hand signals on the sled.

tapping on top of your helmet palm down is the signal the police are ahead.

Excellant point!! We should post this in its own thread so everyone sees it. I didn't know that was the signal. I wish everyone knew and used this signal. Lets put the word out.

speed limit in MN is 50 mph on trails, 65 mph on bigger lakes. Get a motorcycle radar detector-fits in your shirt pocket and has a earpiece that fits inside of your helmet. Runs on two AA batteries and no one will even know if you have one. Mine is a Bel and detects laser, X, etc basically anything that the crappie cops are using.

Doesn't really matter. Police almost everywhere are using some type of instant on radar now. Like laser, it's very hard to detect unless you are the targeted one, in which case, it's too late. Unlike laser, they can use it any time.

My Escort X50 will detect police using instant on atleast a half mile down the road. (picking up the Radar from cars down the road) My Cobra detector did not. As long as you're not the only person on the road and you have a good detector you can pick up instant on.

Seen the cops hiding in NY once with radar, it was right down the road from Barrows speed shop, they were sitting up on top the snow backs along the road. Could not see them until you were right on top of them, if you even seen them then. You realy had to be looking. Then last year we stopped at tabolts corners on the way to flat rock and there were three cops sitting there. Now this was at around 9pm. I there was like 12 of us, we all grouped back up there and left before they came over to us and checked paper work. We get to flat rock and we are waiting for one guy who was not there yet. We waited almost 5 mins I think, a few of us already put our helments back on to go look for the guy. The next thing here comes these 3 cops, they go by the parking lot, see us and come back in. They then proceed to tell us that we were doing some outrages average speed and we need to slow down. They told us next time it would be a ticket and not a warning. The speed they said was so off the wall it was not even funny. But anyway they do hide up there and they do, do some stupid "edit for bad language" things.

It just shows that cops are pigs with nothing better to do than break balls, and collect money for the state. N.Y. is the worst.

O so true, last year I went to New York 10 times, I got stopped 14 times. So that is more than twice a weekend. If they are going to sit any were they should sit in some of the corners were people can not seem to stay on there side. I know of a few corners up there were it seems like I always run into someone on my side of the trail. And there is plenty of room for the cops to sit there. It does not bother me so much because I have been lucky enough not to get hit, but I think of the people up there with there kids. Do not get me wrong I ride hard and would not have it any other way, but when you ride hard you also have to respect the other people out there on the trail.

Best Radar detector without question is the Valentine 1. Tells if it is a front, rear or side hit and how many radar sources. Any battery operated detector is limited, you need power to have any range. Once you use a Valentine 1, no going back. I dont use it on my sled though is does have a earpiece jack.

IMO the Escort X50 is better. The V1 was better then the passport 8500. I had a hard time making a decision between the X50 and V1. Im very happy wiht my decision though. They are very close in performance, prolly not enough to make a difference.
