Primary Clutch Spring Question - 2000 MXZ 700

We recently purchased a 2000 MXZ Millenium Edition. Nice sled, and in really good condition.

It engages way too high, sort of 4,600 to 4,700 I think. Removed the primary spring. It's a green/silver. I've verified all the spring charts and can not find any data on this color combination. It's 130mm long. It's got to be at least a 200 force@lbs, or more. (my guess)

Somebody offered me a different spring. It's purple/blue. Based on the chart, it's a 160/290. So, I'm thinking it will drop my engagement by 400'ish RPM. The only question I have is the length. It seems to be 120mm.

What will be the impact, of the shorter spring (by 10mm)? Would it be risky using this spring? (failure, damage, etc...)

Thanks in advance,

Are you sure its not the stock GN/VI spring in there and its just faded a bit and looks silver? The stock GN/VI has a starting force of 200 and finish rate of 320. I didnt see a purple/blue either, are you sure its not a violet? The VI/BL spring is 160/290.

With the stock spring engagement should be 3800 rpm. Is your belt in good shape and within spec?

Springs come in all different lengths, as long as its for a TRA won't be a issue

Looks like the stock spring was green/violet (200/320), by going to the purple purple(160/320) should drop engagement by about 400rpm's and your peak should remain the same. Figure for every 10# change in force you'll change rpm's by 100. From your description for engagement that by going to the stock setup you should be down in the 36-3800rpm's. But take in account that is if nothing else has been changed in either clutches. Stock 700's ran pretty strong

New season means still trying to find comfortable primary setup. I've done more research, buying and testing.

The sled came with a green/white (thought it was silver, but that doesn't exist), and stock 298 ramps. It engaged too high for my liking (see comments above)

We then tested with stock 298 ramps, but put in a Purple/Blue spring (160/290, 115mm long). It engaged lower, at about 3,800 (where I would like to have it)

We then tested with stock 298 ramps, but put in a new OEM stock Green/Purple spring (200/320, 130mm long) It engaged way too high, around 4,500+.

We then tested with governor cup from a 2002 MXZ 700, so with 300 ramps, new OEM stock Green/Purple spring (200/320, 130mm long) It engaged closer to 4,200.

Stock specifications:

The 2000 MXZ 700 has 25/43 gearing, 298 ramps, Green/Purple spring (200/320 and 130mm long)

The 2000 Formula Z 700 has 25/43 gearing, 297 ramps, Purple/Yellow spring (160/230 and 158mm long)

The 2000 Formula Deluxe 700 has 25/44 gearing, 298 ramps, Purple/Purple spring (160/320 and 107mm long)

The 2002 MXZ 700 has 25/43 gearing, 300 ramps, Green/Purple spring (200/320 and 130mm long)

All these sleds are "supposed" to engage at 3,800RPM +or- 200RPM.

We checked the distance between both clutches. It's at 17.0mm, so within spec (16.5mm +or- 0.5mm). Belt is almost new, correct part number, and good width. Sled has about 10,000 miles. I'm still stumped on why I can't achieve the 3,800 engagement with stock setup.

Should I continue to test more springs and ramps? Or, should I go with what currently works (Purple/Blue spring, 160/290 and 115mm long, with 298 ramps)?

Could used/worn bushing cause that much of an RPM difference on engagement?

Sorry for all the questions... not a clutch expert. Simply trying to enjoy the sled, especially at lower/cruising speeds.

Interesting information on the specifications you list for "stock specifications" for engagement. Can you please tell us what the source is? What do the variances in the "gearing" and "ramps" number mean. I am not familiar with the terms? I have a 2002 mxz 700 Olympic Renegade

Um what's in it for pins ? Different pin weight will change engagement as well . Do all those sleds have the same pins ?
