In recent years I've read/heard of guys swapping the OEM BRP clutch for a Power Bloc clutch. Is this the same clutch that was an aftermarket choice (like the various Comets) back in the 70s or just similar in name only?

I believe it’s the same design as the ones you speak of from the 70’s and later. The newer PB 80 versions that are popular are produced by CV Tech. They also produced smaller versions that came on fan cooled skidoos. I believe Cat and Polaris used them as well.

The PB80 is a great clutch. I am pretty sure it's used on some ATV's as well.

I was looking in Phil Mickelson's Ski-doo Buyer's Guide tonight & it mentioned that the 94 Tundra used a Power Bloc clutch. I can't imagine the same clutch used on a Type 277 single cylinder motor is the same one used on motors that make 2 or 3 times the power.

We use several PB80's on tuned 900 na and 1200's . light weight , super simple to adjust and easy to maintain

Yep our 2005 550 had a PB50. Great design. Very few moving parts means superb longevity
