Backing sled off trailer today, and engine died idling. Went to E start, but felt underpowered (figured battery dead). Went to pull start, and cord had no tension and didn’t recoil. When I go to E start I can see the Bendix spinning but it doesn’t move over to engage the flywheel. Pull start doesn’t rewind even when I spin the primary.

Clutch start did work, but it sounded like something was clinking in the engine area (not sure if block or clutch making the noise).

What am I likely looking at? With a clutch start, the sled was able to move enough to load on trailer (that’s all I tried). But It didn’t sound good.

What would cause both my E start Bendix and pull start to give up at the same time? Seems like a great cause that’s making both not work, and engine sound like something came loose.

Any ideas ? Haven’t checked compression yet.

2015 renegade 600 carb. Has 8k miles, never been opened but compression was great just 2 weeks ago.

I just replaced the rollers and was running well since (400 miles)

Your Bendix may need a little oil in the area that it slides forward on to engage the flywheel. I put a brand new Ski-Doo recoil on my 2016 800 XRS and never used it for thousands of miles then one day I went to use it and The Recoil spring had broke. I think due to vibration over those thousands of miles. Definitely don't think they're related on your sled they're just a coincidence.

It may be 'probably' a broken so-and-so part. But it's impossible to say and guarantee what is broken and if it will cause damage or not.

When you say that it did not sound good, do mean some rattling part? Or what exactly?

Sounds like rattling, I was paranoid crank related but now I’m thinking it’s just the pull start assembly / recoil. The battery was the issue for E start. When I replaced the battery today it fired right up.

In the same recoil where the spring broke, I had replaced the spring. Again thousands of miles later the clip fell off that retains the assembly. That made a lot of plastic parts Rattle and grind so I immediately took it apart. One of the major dangers to your motor is that clip. It's metal and can be lodged somewhere in your flywheel magnets taking out your stator. I would definitely remove it and see what's going on.
