question is- what is considered high mileage for a ski doo? 4000 miles for a 2001 mxz 500, is this to many miles for 1500 bucks? thanks any info how long does it take to wear a track out normally?

As important as how many miles, is who put them on and in what conditions. I've seen sleds with 500 miles that look like they've gone to hell and back, and then seen sleds with 13,000 miles that look showroom new. Usually, anything with over 5k should probably be re-rung (Piston rings) if not yet done. Tracks, when riden in good snow and not abused can still look good at 7k.
I'd bank on that 500 with 4k miles would be a good bet for $1500 as long as the previous owner did his maintenance. Wouldn't hurt to check compression for a little peace of mind.

your post as well as the original question interest me. we ride alot of miles. i find it interesting that we put 3-6000 plus miles per year on sleds and dont have to do all these rebuilds that i read about on here all the time. if you take care of a sled you might be surprised how long they last. we had an 05 renegade that finally blew the motor at 13,000 miles in january 2007. only other repairs done to it prior to that was a ring gear on the electric start and some fuses. if the compression checks good the motor should not need any repairs until it gives you problems. the same goes for shocks. i continually see guys that talk about needing to rebuild shocks. 13,000 miles on factory shocks with no rebuild. i really get a kick out of all these guys who dont break or barely break a 1000 miles of riding in a season talking about what you need to fix, do, repair, change. oh and goose997 not making fun of you or questioning your post or saying that you dont ride much or know what you are talking about just expressing my views about everything.

That 500 liquid can run for 8k+ if properly maintained. Being 9 years old, it should be pretty clear by now whether or not it was taken care of.

If it looks purty and the guy seems like he knows what he's talking about (or can provide paperwork that his dealer serviced it), I would offer him $1300.

I have had many Ski-Doos over the years and have put 5000-6000 miles without any major issues. 03 Rev sold with 5000 miles with the original drive belt and spark plugs, always carried spares but the originals never falled. Never had to spend a dime on parts, just gas and oil, I still own a 04 Renegade with 15000 Kms. with just a rebuilt engine, it still has the original track and shocks. I had friends with Ski-doos, Polaris and Yammys back in the late 90's with 15000 Km. without major problems. Riders having troubles with low mileage must be riding without proper regular maintanance or riding the poop outa their sleds.

Just my 2 cent!!!!!!!

from what i read on here (complaints) it seems to me that most of the guys problems happen after buying a new finely tuned and test stock machine and "tweaking" it so it will "run better" 9 out of 10 times it seems the threads that are complaing about something when asked if the sled is stock or modded will start listing all their little mods they have done. it does not hurt to mod sleds if you know what you are doing, but be prepared for the mods to cause you problems when you least expect it.

again those items depend on how you take care of a sled i feel. we have a friend who stored his 02 renegad outside year round whose jackshaft went out at under 4000 miles on a 02 in 06. however we have owned an 05 with 13,000 miles and had no problems until we blew the motor. we have another 02 that has stayed in the family and has around 7000 miles on it now and the only repairs to it was a clutch rebuild and he had to have the pipe rewelded at the y after a mini wreck in wyoming where he went over the handlebars and stopped abruptly landing on top of the hood. storage, and service on a sled are a big deal. i saw a sled on ebay the other day that was obvious it was stored outside year round. it was an 06 or 07 1000 and the pic of the motor showed lots of rust on all the interior metal parts of the motor. myself i would stay away from something that looks bad.

I have an 02 Grand Touring 600 GS. I bought it new in the fall of 2001. I do regular maintenance on it, annual chassis lube and sliders once per year, bearings on skid frame as required. It now has 21500km on it and I am replacing the rear center shock on the skid frame and the two springs for the first time. The shock has an obvious leak and the springs are preventative maintenance. The engine needed a top end at 18500km. That was the first work done to it. The rave valves are cleaned once per year. Track was replaced at 14000 km, carbides every 6000 km. If you do some maintenance these sleds can run reliably for many years. I run shell synthetic oil.

Don't kill the messenger but what I have been told is this. Each 1000 miles on a sled is approximately 7000 on a car. You would surely buy a car with 28,000 on it or a sled with 4000 miles wouldn't you?. Told this by a dealer as they see people approach 3000/4000 miles and start to panic and go after a new sled???I have friends going to Canada every year with 10 and 11 thousand miles on their sleds without even worrying about it. Of course who put the miles on it also plays into the equation for sure.

you know i agree with how you describe it. it amazes me how many low mile riders act like they know what is too many miles on a sled. but when a person buys a sled it is their money and their choice of what to buy. i got to laugh even more when guys talk about the great deal they got on a 3 year old sled with 400 miles on it. not that they are not out there but alot of guys would unplug their speedos. it might surprise some with how many miles their doos have on them if they put them on the computer. the only reason i sell every two years is that i ride alot of miles and have found it very difficult to get much out of sleds with 8-10,000 or more miles on them.

Here is my old 01 600 MXZ. Sold with a little over 7000 miles on the ticker. All it needed was a new track. The carbs, clutches, all the essentials were cleaned every year by my dad and I. Didn't show much wear for an 01 even when rode hard. Just took care of it.

Your best bet is to run through the sled to see how well the took care of it. Look for lost of belt dust built up, rust, crud, and anything that seems cobbed together to get a view of how is was taken care of.

i had an 02 800 that color. 2nd sled i ever bought new. sold it to my brother with around 5000 miles on it when my 04 renegade x came in. he still has it and rides it. only thing done is he rebuilt the clutch. i like your yellow vents on it.

" the only reason i sell every two years is that i ride alot of miles and have found it very difficult to get much out of sleds with 8-10,000 or more miles on them."

I believe the above statement means he has less than 8 thousand miles on his 2 year old sled before he sells it.
He says it's hard to get much out of machines in the 8 to 10 range, hence the reason he sells them before they get there. Which I completley agree with. Makes complete sence. I just though it was funny that he said that after saying people replace engine and suspension parts to early, which again is true. But no different then replacing the sled to early!

So the answer to your question is yes, I did read his post.
He puts 3 to 6 k a year on, thinks people that rack 1k a year and replace stuff all the time are silly. But sells every to years with less than 8 to 10 k. Did u do the math?

i actually buy new every two years for the main reason of i cant stand watching all them pretty new sleds go by and not have one. that and i am lucky enough to have the ability to do that. most of my recent sleds have had between 5-6000 miles or more on them when i sold them. i had one listed for my dad which was ridden 5058 miles from march 2007 to march 2008. i could not believe the things people emailed and thought you had to replace. needless to say we got more in trade for a new summit x then we had listed it for and kept some of the add ons. additionally in the past i did not buy the brp extended 4 year warranty so it was another factory in selling besides the dollar value of the sleds when selling/buying new. i only currently have one sled but plan on keeping this one thru the warranty period which is 4 years bumper to bumper. i still plan on buying a new sled next season (i hope) as far as comparing rebuilding a sled thats not broken and selling before the miles hit the perceived (high) mark is a reach. if i sell my sled for $7000 thats what i have. if you take the same sled valued at $7000 and spend $1500 changing shocks and rings and whatever alot of guys feel they need to do you still have a $7000 sled. and yes i do think that guys who ride 1000 miles on a sled then rebuild everything are silly. i spend less buying new every two years and selling my higher mile sled than they do rebuilding stuff that is not broken. oh and the 10,000 mile mark is not where i fell reliability is sacrificed. i feel that is where most riders today would assume the sled has seen its better days. hell at 5058 miles on an 07 ridden for 1 year most people thought it needed a total rebuild and we even had a bumper to bumper factory warranty on it.

My dad has an 04 500ss adr w/28,000kms and I rode up to the gas station last year and someone who wasnt to familiar with late model sleds came up to me and said, " Man, it must be nice to have a brand new sled like that!" I chuckled and said yah but hardly new, and let him know about the mileage.

Its all about maintenance.

I purchased a 2001 Summit 800 with 4k for $1800 for my father. These sleds seem to run forever! regular maintenance is definitely key. Ask the seller about fluid changes, cleaning, belts. Make sure you know about something small that may put a bigger price tag on that machine in the future.

You can have a 5,000mi. sled that was ridden by a woman on nothing but groomed trails and no throttle jockying, or a 5,000mi. sled that was ridden by a hooligan. BOTH sleds can be cleaned up to look like new but the hooligan sled will have bushing/bearing wear, track wear, sagged out shocks etc. etc. Too many variables to say what mileage is considered "high" but I'd walk from ANY sled with 10,000mi. on the clock. Just my opinion.. Nice thing about being in southern PA. is that there a lot of 3-5 year old sleds with just a few thousand miles on them for sale all the time.
