Where do you guys recommend staying in the UP of MI. I am coming from NY so I would like to keep to the east side as much as I can. I know that a lot of you guys leave there so I was wondering if you could help me out.

Right now I am looking at staying at Countrywood Cabins, it is located at Kinross, MI 49752.

Thanks for any information in advance,
Ryan

I have ridden Tug Hill and most of the U.P.. The east part of the U.P. is sweet! BUT, if you are going to make the drive that far.....at least stay in Munising and ride west!!!!!! Once you get to Calumet, you will want to keep going!!!
At least check out Grand Marais! (which is pretty much on the east of the U.P.)

Not a bad choice. I am not familiar with those cabins, but you can rail any where in da U.P. from there. Snow can be spotty along the southern portion of da U.P. but from Kinross west and north should be great. We like to stay a little more in the central part as you can go more places with out using the same trails to get there. Lots of two track riding between Kinross and Trout Lake, especially in the East Lake area. Feel free to p.m. me if you would like some specifics.
That's a great area. You can go west or you can head into Canada via Drummond Island.

Drummond?
Kinross?
Munising?
Calumet?
Marais?

Folks from the "UP" must speak a different language. Never seen words like them before. I was picking up on keep words like "snow"
, so it must be a great language to speak in and a cool place to live.

I like riding that area, we usually stay in brevort. I have never been to the western u.p. maybe this year i,ll get over there. It.s a 8.5 hour drive just to get to the u.p.,
If the snows good you should have a great time.

I have place in Brimley. Good place to start. Snow is usually very good. Bay Mills Hotel and Casino is a good place to stay. Rates are not bad, good food, etc.

Thanks everyone. I will be heading up in the middle of Feb.. I want to make sure that the snow it ok. Was there good snow in the eastern part of UP last year?

Thanks,
Ryan

How long are you going to stay eh?

When we plan trips to the UP eh! we try and stay somewhere that has at least 4 trails leaving the town. That way you dont ride the same trail every day eh.

Check out this site. It has trail maps eh.

http://fishweb.com/recreation/snowmobile/trails/trails1.html

I would stay around Newberry. Not in Newberry. You can go east or west north and south and see a good portion of the UP eh.

You should also start ending every other sentence with eh (pronounced "A") so you fit in eh.

It is easy to ride 250 miles a day in the UP eh.

hey cateater, myself and two of my buddies drove to the up last year. i live in the binghamton ny area (not far from you). we stayed in grand marais. it was a long drive, about 14 hours, but well worth it. we had no snow here and even lewis county at the time had had a warm week. there really was no place on the east coast to go except northern maine, and i had already been there. we rode east and west of grand marais. most of the riding was good to excellent.
Hey thanks for the places and the links. I am going to look into it more today and post a couple places if you guys could give me a yay or nay...

Thanks guys,
Ryan
you will like riding out of kinross, lot of differnt routes. i have a place about 35 miles south & put 2000 miles a year riding around that area. you will have a great time.

Would you say that there is always great snow there in Feb.?

Ryan
We always go to St. Ignace. We leave our sleds there all winter. The trails are groomed very well going out of there. By Feb. they will have plenty of snow. It's just across the bridge and I'd rather spend my time riding than driving. Used to go to Munising all the time but have found the riding out of St. Ignace just as enjoyable. And with the cost of fuel when pulling a trailer I want to keep highway time to a minimum. If you consider going there, let me know and I'll give you a # for the motel we always stay at.
Mid Feb in the UP will be great. Some of my favorite places to stay in the Eastern/central UP are, Trout Lake, Lots of Spokes in the Wheel so to speak, a new area to explore every day. Brevort, Seney, Grand Marais. For Real big Snow in the UP, The West is the only place to Go, Can you say Keewenaw?? 300 inch snowfalls are common, Faves there are Calumet, Houghton, Copper Harbor. Good luck on your UP trip, You will not be disappointed, eh.
