Lightning Trailers

Solved my trailer space problem. Graduating from a 2 place with a shell to a 29ft Lightning. Yes big step but I couldn't really pass up the deal and I really need a 4 place trailer, been hauling three, two in the trailer one in the bed and had to remove the windshield off my Renegade each time to fit under the shell. Plus with another new Renegade on the way I had to address this issue.

I'm really excited about the Lightning, I searched looked and studied Neo, Stealth, RC, Ameralite, MTI, Legend, Triton, Aluma and Look. The Lightning came out on top in my book for overall value. Aluma and Triton are some very well built trailers, the Aluma was very impressive but at nearly twice the cost of what I got I just couldn't justify it. The Lightning I settled on has the Radar package which adds finished inside walls, aluminum wheels and 16" OC walls, floors and ceiling among other nice things. None of the other "cheap" trailers offered the structure of the Lightning at the price, the build and welds are acceptable if not nearly the best of them. Aluma and Neo have top notch craftsmanship and I was really after a Neo but when I ran across the Lightning with the structure, features and price it beat the Neo. There are little things with the Lighting too that make it nice, like the flush flaps on the ramps (a lot like Neo), the recessed LED lights aren't hanging out to be clipped, nice RV style side door, the ramp door seals were the best of all, even better than the Aluma I thought, and the cam bars are powder coated so maybe not as good as stainless but better than zinc. The interior is finished white all the way from the side boards to the ceiling and d ring placement is spot on.

And the price was within $600 of the lowest price competitor's stripped down versions which were also 27' not 29'. The dealer talked me into a 29' over the 27 and for the price I couldn't argue plus he had it on lot. Now I've got tons of room.

Part of what sold me too was the dealer. Donato Sales in Kokomo IN. They are fairly close to me, the owner was very knowledgeable in what a snowmobiler wants in a trailer, was very straight on his pricing and no extra fees, even sold me a helmet rack at a huge discount to go with it. If you're in the market for a trailer and within driving distance of Kokomo, IN I'd give them a shout, I'm glad I did.

Congrats! You'll have to post pics of it including how you finished off the interior with accessories.

I have a 2012 NEO 7x28 that I love....but always like to hear what other people have found and why they liked what they bought.

Hopefully the dealer also talked you into going with a 6'6" interior height...comes in handy if you ever trailer a side-by-side ATV....plus

if you are tall it's nice not having to duck when you walk around in the trailer.

Congrats again...go big or go home!!! :smile_old:

Congratulations! Post pictures if you get a chance. Never heard of this trailer dealer but will have to look them up when I'm in the market for a snowmobile trailer. Kokomo is about 30-40 minutes straight east of me so it would be nice to buy local. I usually drive thru Kokomo when going to Shortsleeve Motorsports (skidoo dealer) so I might have to stop at Donato Sales & check them out!

First off sorry for the misdirection on where Donatos is at. They are in Logansport not Kokomo. Jim Danato is great to work with and seems to know his stuff. It's worth the trip just to see his cars. He restores and sells classic exotics. Anyway real happy with it towed home empty real nice. I'll put a pic below its not the best but all I got right now been very busy getting equipment put up for winter. Haven't done anything to the trailer yet I'll post pics when I do.

Would like some pointers if y'all don't mind. I'm debating what to with the floor. Should I paint it? Seal it? Should I just put ski guides and track mats on the ramp doors? Ski guides are so expensive and I really don't want them all over the floor. I'd like to create some way to tie down cargo in the nose like gas cans, totes for gear and such. Not sure what to use. Trying not to spend a fortune. Also thinking of some jacks or stabilizers for the rear in case I want to load/unload unhitched

Very nice setup, congratulations on the purchase!

As far as the flooring goes, I too went through this when I bought my new 7x23 stealth last year. I found that low pro grip glides and track grips on the ramps and nothing on the floor works well. Nice not having a bunch of things on the floor and once the sled is in the trailer you won't spin the track. I have the advantech flooring in mine and it seems to be holding up to the carbides very well so far.

I load and unload mine un hitched with no problems and I don't have rear stabilizers.

Gonna try Caliber grip glides. Not the low pro grip glides but the small cleated bars placed in a row. Gonna put them on the front ramp door since I plan on loading from the front and out the back. One kit of 30 some odd pieces they say will do one ramp door. Looks relatively unobtrusive, grippy for walking on and inexpensive. Prob put them on this weekend.

Still looking for pointers on some sort of shelving on tie down system for gas cans and totes in the nose.

I'll prob try loading up the sleds this weekend and doing some head scratching. This is my first v nose trailer ever so all new stuff to me. Also need to figure out where my helmet/suit rack will go

I also just picked up a Lightning Trailer 7x14+5' Vee front.
Picture is 2 weeks ago on the day I picked it up
Looked at a lot of them but kept coming back to the lightning for overall value for my buck.
Got it with the xtra 6" height and ordered it with 2 windows in it soo we can haul the motorcycles with it in the summer and camp in it.
Ordered it with airline tracking recessed in the floor because you can never have too many places to tie down to

Here's a few shots. Getting started on the inside. Got a piece of aluminum angle to make a place for gas cans to sit and provide a ski guide. Picked up a cabinet at Menards on clearance. It will go above gas cans. Also received the Caliber Grip Glides today. Going to put those down on the ramp doors in combination with some garage trim boards. Will b moving it into the shop tomorrow pretty cold outside. Also gonna undercoat the axles and springs.

Those poor cans need a bit of venting.....lol

Yeah stupid new cans plus cold weather. Ha ha. In the summer they blow up like balloons. But hey these are " safe" right? I've spilled more gas dinking with these new spouts than I ever did with old gas cans.

Funny how the tree huggers do something to save the world and only cause more harm than good. I've spilled so much more gas than ever before since those stupid spouts came out. I refuse to use them anymore.....

Only reason I have them is my youngest son has trouble lifting a full gas can to pour it and with the new spouts he can get it in position an then push on it to open the spout. He pours it like a champ doesn't spill a drop. Maybe when he gets bigger we won't need them and I can just cut the safety devices off. The new cans are also a bit more stable when sitting.

Here's a few shots of what I've done.

Exactly what I was after. Didn't want the floor cluttered. Traction on the ramps but not all covered. And it didn't cost an arm and a leg. Should get the job done just fine. Put guides and cleats on the rear door in case I want to back in. The Caliber Grip Guides worked great I used exactly 32 of them that came in the trailer door kit also used 3 and a part garage door trim 7' pvc boards cut into 16" pieces. One thing I'm going to do yet is put a 12" piece of OSB fastened to the angle rail by the gas cans to keep the cans from tipping and provide a rub rail.

We have a Lightning 8.5' x 16' on order, should be here sometime after Christmas, or the new year. Ordered with the ATP flooring and rubber coin ramp (I think that's what its called), Its good to hear that they make a quality product. We needed an enclosed trailer and just could not justify spending over $14K for an Aluma.

Thanks for the compliments. Was more after function than form some guys trailers look really nice with the finished floors and all but I can't justify the cost really. I wanted something easy to use, durable and inexpensive hold four sleds and dry. This trailer will prob only hit the road twice maybe three times in a year the rest of the time it will sit and hold my sleds in the summer. I could put it inside but it would just be in the way and prob get damaged from moving equipment around it. It's prob safer outside. Had my last trailer for 22 yrs. this is like moving from a garage apartment to the Taj Mahal for me. This plus the fourth sled this year has got me pumped this winter. We leave for MI the day after Christmas first time all four of us have gotten to go together and each have their own sled. Of course there will be plenty of riding here at home as well we only need 4-6" to really have some good riding out here on the farm.
