My parents had a similar problem with their computer.... make sure all the sound drivers are installed... check in Control Panel - Sound and Audio devices - On the Volume tab, click Advanced and on the new window click the Advanced button on the bottom and see if the 'Digital Output only' box is Checked... if it is checked, uncheck it and see if that works...

That's what happened to my parents computer and it worked after.
If your keyboard has volume controls on it make sure they are turned up as well.

i have had the computer for 4 years and it has been nothing but problems

and is this the first time it did this
DD papa said to open Windows media player and go to tools or options and set as the default player. This happened to us a while back and apparently sometimes other programs can change its settings so check that.

bottom right corner click on the speaker icon. make sure that nothing is muted and volume sliders are up.

Isn't it time to get rid of that 286 anyways. You need to upgrade to a Pentium.

DD....can you get sound from any app, like put a CD in, play a video, try some sound effects ???
If no sound from anywhere, it could be your sound card that is not working, but also a few other things.

How long ago did you have working sound, who else uses this compuker, has their been any software installed or downloaded ??
Have you gone to Control Panel, sounds, and tried the options there ?
Check device manager while in there and make sure sound card is working correctly...

Get back to me and we'll see if we can figure this out...
