Hey guys, newbie here. I've been reading this forum for a week or two - it's very good. First here's a rundown to get you up to speed. I got a mint '96 F lll that I picked up at an auction last year for $500 bucks, in non-running condition. I was hoping for a an easy fix an get a steal, not the case. The problems are no spark, and the middle cyl. has 85 lbs. compression. I am mechanically inclined, only worked on cars though... So my questions are 1) spark- stator? if so is there any tricks to installing? can it be bolted in and go? 2) compression - the middle jug is screwed, the nicasil is chipped by the exhaust port and bubbled above it, I read on this site that 600 and 700 triples are the same on the bottom end, so could Flll 700 jugs be put on a 600 case without any ill effects? I came across some 700 jugs on ebay, more of a curiosity question than anything. 3)Can I reuse the outside pistons and rering them? Please post any input or personal experience with this sled, I want it done right so I can ride this winter and not fix!!! thanks in advance - rypie

1. No spark usually means bad stator. Could also be CDI or bad coils. Or probably a bunch of other things I am forgetting.

2. 600 and 700 triples share the same bottom end. You can bolt on the top end of a 700 on without problems. However, the pipes/carbs/clutching is different between the 600 and 700.

3. Yes. Obvoiusly the best thing to do is replace all three pistons/cylinders/rings as a set, but as long as the other 2 are in great shape and measure within specs, they'll work just fine. I have about 4 friends that have done just one cylinder and piston, then new rings all around, and they have a few thousand miles on each of their sleds without any problems.

thanks for the reply is there tricks to installing the stator? like alighning marks or shimming the magnet?
Well let me say this..I own a 96 and a 97 FIII i have had stator problems in the past .just dont over look the pickup on the stator housing ..I replaced a stator last year and turned out to be the simple littlew pick up..........OH and I bought a cd on ebay that is a ski-doo service manual on disk cheap!!!!6 bucks ..tells you everything you will need to know..there are ways to test your stator before replacing it...I have a ton of FIII parts if you need anything else besides a cylinder
