grinding reverse

heres the deal: 1997 grand touring se 700. when i put the sled into reverse it might move or not, when you apply throttle i get a grinding noise from the transmission, there is metal shavings on the dipstick. I have pulled the pipes and muffler out along with the 4 bolts for the chaincase cover but the cover will not come off yet; I'm I missing a important step to get the cover off??? I have pryed the cover very little(do not want to break it) and there is resistance still. I do have the shop manual but is does not include the type F transmission. If someone can inform me on the proper way to remove the cover it would be great. also any ideas what to look for on the inside? I also have a couple of exploded diagrams of the transmission.
As far as I know the reverse linkage properly, thanks

First off, unless it's a MXz it should have 5 bolts around the cover (check the very bottom)and then there is a bigger bolt with a lock tab, probably just above half way up in the cover which supports the shaft the reverse gear is on...
If it not jumping out of gear while going ahead,it could be chain adjustment, linkage adjustment,or a bad bearing....You need to undo the linkage off the arm to make it easier to get the fork out of the collar while rmoving the cover....Shavings are normal, they all make a bit...
Almost forgot, been a while,if the spacer behind the lower sprocket is installed backwards,it will allow the sprocket to work its way off the bearing and the drive pins will not stay engaged. Think it shows up in reverse first, but the fun part is when you lose drive, you also lose brakes! Make sure the bigger side of the spacer goes against the gear not bearing....
Check all your bearings while apart especially if you just lost your speedo(bad speedo drive side bearing).Sometimes it's just worn linkage not putting it all the way in...good luck

Before pulling the cover, get as much diagnosis as possible - try adjusting the chain - hand tight to remove all slack then back off to install the pin. Check to see if its still noisy. If it still is pull the cover and look for a reason.

I got to tear it apart today thanks for the help. what I found was the sliding gear sprocket (19 tooth) teeth where ground down on the edges will need to replace those 2 gears. I think that the sliding gear was not moving enough and grinding the edges off both gears. any help on adjusting would be great

one other thing,on your bottom gear there are 3 buttons that can slide in and out, sometimes they wear/rounded and cause the gear to slip,if they are worn you can use the cat one's they are a bit longer and wont wear(grab better)i did this on my zx and it worked great,im sure the 97 has the same type buttons as my zx

I,d say your diagnosis is right on , i had the same problem wiyth my 03 a year after installing reverse. I think skidoo,s instructions are flawed, i made the linkage about a quarter inch longer. And have had no more issues in last two years.
