First Time Buyer - XP vs XM

I've been shopping around for my first sled and cant decide if I should pony up for an XM or save a few bucks and go with the XP.

It seems around the Anchorage area, for a sled with around 1200 miles or less, the 11-12 Summit 800s are running $5000-$6000 and 13+ Summits are $7500-$9500.

Being a sled newbie, should I pony up for the XM chassis or stick with an XP? Knowing myself, I'll probably get a season or two on my first sled then I will most likely pony up and get a brand new one when I know more about the sport.

In my head I think an XP will be plenty fun for now then I can upgrade to the new 850 after I get a few seasons under my belt. On the flip side of that, everyone seems to be raving about the T-motion skid.

For some rider reference im not a complete powersports idiot. I've been on 4 wheelers since I was very young and have spent the last few years enjoying Glamis. I just dont have jack squat for experience on a sled.

Any advice would be very appreciated. I've been looking at everything from brand new sleds to sleds with 2500 miles, sleds stored indoors and outdoors, old and new, 2 and 4 stroke.... lots of options.

Yes there are a lot of threads about it but nothing in regards to experience.

For example, coming from my atv background. You can throw a newbie rider on a stock 450 atv, and then throw them on a 450 with long travel 3-way suspension, and they wont know a lick of difference because they dont have the experience to ride it like it was designed for yet.

Thats my situation I guess..... As a new rider will I actually notice the benefits of the T-motion skid or is this one of those fine-tune benefits that only an experienced rider would recognize. If it wasnt June I would try and ride both but you know how that goes.

Im buying a house this fall so I will definitely be purchasing used right now. The local Doo dealer told me $11.5 for a '15 with 3 year warranty. They dont have any more 16s. I would totally go scoop up a new 850 this fall if I wasnt trying to get a house right now.

I have a xp with t-motion, s-36 and I love it and go anywhere my friends with XMs and pros go, but if you can afford it I would get a xm just for newer/better resale. Not sure where you live/ride but realistically you can find 14-15 xms for around $8k by me. Now is a great time to buy a summit with the Gen4 coming out summit used prices are low. This one in Minnesota is a screaming deal.

He'll love it, no doubt in my mind! Buy as new as you can afford. The XM's are just plain easier to ride than the XP's. You can throw parts at an XP and make it a handle as easy as an XM, but by the time you put $1500 to $2500 into an XP, you'd have enough to just buy the XM in the first place.

Where is the "unlike" button

I personally just picked up a brand new 16 800 carb XP because they were pretty much giving them away down here. Of course I'm dumping a bunch of $$$ into it, but I'm coming off a BB Rev. A bunch of my buddies have XMs and they absolutely love them. Parts for the XP are much cheaper as well, and that is important because trust me, if you ride off trail/mountain, you will break stuff. Like the others have said, what ever fits your budget

Call team cc in eagle river, last i knew they still had a couple 2016 summit 800 xp carb's left over (same sled trippy bought) at very good prices. If you cant find anything before fall, All Seasons Honda in homer is the best skidoo dealership in the state. And def worth the drive down there. I know for a fact they will have a couple extra 850 g4's hanging out there waiting to get snapped up :) just a thought... hehe!!

Well, there are a couple 2014 XM's within reasonable driving distance with under 500 miles for around $8000

Anchorage doo dealer wants $12.5k for a leftover T3 without the extended warranty, $13k with extended warranty.

My local dealer is out of 16's but wants $11.5 with extended warranty for the '15 summit SP

I probably would have binged for the T3 but the dealer website said $11.4k and they wont honor that price..... Guess im going used.

Imo if you can get a xm, some people will tell you you can make a xp feel like a xm. I call BS, I have both of them actual 3 ski doo at the moment. A modded xp, 14 xm, an a 15 t3 xm, also a new one coming an a 01 mountain max from a friend for free for retro ride days that we do out here.
My xp is very modded 195hp an roughly 410lbs 36 front end etc etc.... It is a fun sled but if I was boondocking I rather ride my t3. Even my wife saw my riding improvement on the t3. Now my xp is the early season an jumper sled an the 14xm is for sale. Got to much in the xp to sell it and it's got a retarded amount of miles on it. In the 4 zeros now.
If you can get a x package, they do ride better than the base model. Or unless you plan to change the shocks out.

Boom!! I am guessing this one will be snapped up shortly.
I talked to that guy weeks ago. his add has been up for over a month (originally didnt have pictures). I was going to buy it for $7500 but I want to hold out and get an etec. He still owes the bank on it too. That is definitely the best price I have seen around here if someone wanted a Ptek though.

So update: I went to a dealer this friday who actually treated me very very well. I talked to a manager who supposedly has 20+ years riding experience and he answered a ton of my newb questions and made several reccomendations. He reccomended that I keep an eye out for a used XM, and if I dont find anything, to come back and check with him on rebates at the end of the month (to see if the current rebates that end on July 31st are the best they will be or if they are expecting anything better).

Their prices on 2015 leftovers were within $1000-$1500 of the used sleds in out area, and those sleds typically have 1000+ miles. That, and our meeting with a mortgage lender went very very well, so I feel a lot more comfortable going after a new machine.

I'll wait it out another month for a used XM and if nothing comes up I'm going back to the dealer. Thanks dootalk for all the opinions and information!

If this hobby ends up anything like my desert/dune toys, I will definitely be wrenching and changing things out. The dealer highly reccommended (just as this forum did) that the clutch weights get swapped and that new shocks go on as soon as possible.

Yeah if u can find a left over no doubt go that route. Are there still finding a lot of 15s? For clutch weights you only need to change them if your going to different elevation, if you buy from a dealer they will set them up for your elevation. Shocks are good to upgrade but don't feel the need to drop major coin the first year, stock shocks are good enough for learning. Good luck, now sell that RAZR and get yourself a can am:)
