On another post a discussion morphed into a interesting topic. Emissions and catalytic converters. I replied to some concerned about the future cost of emissions. And replied:

You will see all 4 strokes before you will see cats on a two stroke snowmobile. Cats cant take the load of oil rich fuel on startup. It is almost impossible to get a cat to heat up enough at the end of a expansion chamber. And you can't put them near the port as you render the expansion chamber useless.

Stihl 2 stroke chainsaws use a small cat but don't have expansion chambers. Without expansion chambers two stroke engines make much less power. As a result their largest saw 125cc makes 8.7 hp whereas a 125cc kart race two strokes claim to make 40+hp in hyper race trim (unverified). No pipe would make your 600 have about 36hp.

I have a 1200 ski doo. I just thought the can coming out of the engine at the end of the header was a cat I never looked. What is it.Forgive me I have never had it off.
