Looks like 103 hp versus 115 hp, but most dyno reports say that 105 versus 118 is more likely.

I've owned both-- I recommend the 500SS. The powerband & clutching is much smoother. On the really tight trails this extra smoothness means the 500SS is faster because you can ease into the throttle earlier in the turn without worrying about it throwing you off your line. On the lake, the 500SS is only 4-5 mph slower on top but has just as good a holeshot. Most say the clutching of the 500SS is the best BRP has.

The 500 SS has 597cc's with a bore and stroke of 76 x 65.8 mm and is a smoother motor then the 600HO which is a smoother motor then the 800.

The 600HO has 594 cc's (actually smaller then the 500ss) with a bore and stroke of 72 x 73 mm's. It is ported more radically and of course makes more power.

Why I would opt for the 600HO is that it shares the same crankcase and crankshaft of the 700 motor. One can find 700 cylinders on Ebay or from one of the sled junk yard dealers for a reasonable cost. Get them ported and pick up a set of SPI pistons and have a about a 128/130 hp (almost the same power of a stock 800) sled the first time you need to rebuild it for a reasonable cost. And it is a much smoother engine with the 73 mm stroke then the vibrating 800 and it's 75.7 mm stroke
