I'm in the market to buy a helmet communicator for next sledding season. I'm mostly interested in good audio quality with noise cancellation as I will mainly be listening to music while riding.

I'm leaning towards the Cardo Packtalk Bold as it comes with good JBL 40mm speakers, but I'm open to other suggestions as this unit seems a bit pricey for mostly listening to music and answer the odd call when I need to.

Here's my criteria in order of importance:

  • Must fit the CKX Mission Helmet
  • Bluetooth
  • Waterproof
  • Works down to -20C
  • Mostly will be used to listen to music, so very good audio quality with noise cancelation
  • Intercom feature is a nice to have but not necessary as I don't ride with many others that use a communicator.

Stick with your choice you have mentioned>>>>>Cardo Packtalk Bold>>>>>Might be a little more pricey but well worth to me and my other guys I ride with>>>>If only your going to use for music maybe there is other ones out there but for talking between riders these seem pretty nice>>>>Also you might try some wireless ear buds to connect to your phone also and maybe cheaper too>>>

Thanks for the feedback.

I tried the wireless earbuds (AirPods) this past season, and they don't stay in the ear very well when putting on the helmet and if I do get them to stay on, they tend to slip out after a while of riding.

I was looking at the Cardo Freecom 1+ at first, but I'd have to buy the JBL speakers separately which starts to add up in price. Thats why I'm looking the Packtalk Bold. I figure if it tics off my requirements plus gives me features that I may use down the road, then I'm good with that.

Make sure to get the 2 pack. You'll save some money when you sell the second one to someone you ride with. 8 of us in our group installed them last season and they worked well.
Can you give an idea of the range between just 2 riders? Does it have to be line of sight or does it reach some through trees, hills, and corners?
Thank you.

How would a few of these work with the Garmin Tread gps with group ride radio? It has a hand mic that works on MURS VHF frequency. Or it can also work with a paired bluetooth headset. Obviously one of these bluetooth Cardio communicators doesn't have VHF. But for those who have used one. To communicate does it have a push to talk button? It would be paired with the Garmin Tread so the communication would then go through the group ride VHF to another garmin tread VHF to bluetooth headset.

I've gone from

Uclear Amp Plus

to

Sena 20S

to

Cardo Packtalk Bold JBL

to

Uclear Motion 6

and back to

Cardo Packtalk Bold JBL.

I wear hearing aids, the CPB by far has the loudest volume and best clarity at volume, but the mic whether boom or fixed gets wet from your breath's condensation (in an BRP O2 helmet so no breath box) then quits working until dry. Cardo is aware of the issue and their reply is they made the comms for motorcycles and don't have a solution for sledding.

The Uclear has the best mic set up, as you can mount them in the brow of the helmet, out of the way and no moisture problem. Also great for flip up helmets as the mic is never in the way. Unfortunately this doesn't work the best if your helmet has a breath box. Although I am aware of people that do and they have no issue....this could be more of my problem with my hearing loss.

Having the built in FM radio on the Cardo's is nice too. I use this feature a lot even when group riding.

Any of the brands with DMC, (mesh) is much better than the old Bluetooth, auto reconnect, no drop outs if one member leaves the group, no static or popping noises.

If its mostly music you're interested in I suggest the Cardo

To add to your comment about the mic getting wet, try to relocate the mic in a different place in your O2 helmet. I have the same helmet and do not have a problem with the mic not working. But another rider i ride with does have that problem with a different helmet than the O2 helmet. I also to not have the deflector in place either. I tried at first but removed it>>>>>>

I have the uclear on my mission helmet
What size are the speakers? Did you have to modify the ear opening in the helmet?

The Cardo JBL's are 40mm I believe.

The size of the speakers is a problem with some sizes of Mission helmets - the xxl for sure. I had to get some slimmer speakers since I wasn't ready to carve out foam and the pressure on my ears was unbearable with the JBL speakers. My wife with a medium Mission has no problem and my riding buddy with a xxxl Mission has no problem. My sound quality and volume with the cheap thin speakers isn't very good compared to the JBL's. The speakers are about the size of a stack of 3 Toonies.

Thanks for the insite. I have a Large Mission helmet, so hopefully I won't have to carve out any foam. I'll try the stack of 3 Toonies to see the fit before I buy it.

I installed a motion 6 in my mission. I carved out some pockets. Used some black marker after. Looks like they came with the helmet.

The range is pretty much line of sight when using only 2. You might get a short distance through trees or over a hill but not much. I think all of the brands are the same. The old Collette's had a much greater range but way poorer quality. Normal riding you are always in touch with your partner. Problem is if you get separated they can't call you.

I run the Sena 10s with my wife and she hated the fact that we were going to use communicators... well one season of use and she LOVES them. I guess I'll chalk that up as a win for myself. In the middle of trying to install the communicator on my Mission Helmet and having a tough time getting the clamp mount to accept the unit without it falling out. Either I have to put a spacer in-between the clamp and the helmet or figure out a plan B.
