Im trying to find a small cable puller/comealong that comes in a small plastic case. Orange handle that folds out. Orange case. Can't for the life of me remember the brand. Ring a bell for anybody?

Princess auto used to have them as well but it's no longer on their online catalogue but that doesn't mean it isn't available in store. You would have to call princessatuo and have them do a store look up.
A screen shot i took about two years ago of the same plastic hard case one as above was at 37$ at princess auto.
The others are basically block and tackle rigs since they can easily be fit into a pouch. Similar to the Z-drags used by hikers with kayaks or canoes.

There are massedames (aka capstan winch) or endless rope come alongs but they never come in a carrying case.

Here's another cheap option but i wouldn't trust it.

I saw a gizmo in one of the magazines that attaches to your throttle and you could activate while pulling on your ski. Kind of sounds like a recipe for disaster in the wrong hands. 30 some years ago I saw a kit with hooks that you attach to the track then to a tree to pull yourself out. Saw the same thing on the SOS on the weather channel…a survival show. Guy simply too some light rope tied to the track window then to a a tree and actually pulled machine out. Rope went around track several times as he went about 10 feet. Who knows how that is for the track but if it makes the difference between camping all night or getting home I would give it a go.

Correct, and add to that, the Maasdam pullers are designed to work best with 3-strand rope. Good comment since rope selection is the most important part.

If anyone had ever used a good rope puller (massdam type) they would never consider using a cable puller.

+ another for the Massdam - I keep mine in the bed of the truck to assist getting broken machines up on the deck. I've only used it twice in that scenario (I've pulled things out of creeks and whatnot a few times). It makes getting a large, dead machine up onto the sled deck pretty easy.

The only issue I've had has been with wet/icy rope - sometimes, if wet or icy, the toothed wheel has trouble grabbing the rope - putting enough tension on both ends for it to get sucked in normally takes care of it, and once it is working, it does not slip.

The ONLY benefit a cable puller has, imho, is size - the massdam is pretty large in and of itself, then you need a length of rope to go with it, combined, they take up some space. It is worthwhile, imho. I normally carry a gas powered capstan winch on days when I think winching might be in order - either because I'll be trying to get up/over something tricky, or because I'm going further than I can realistically walk and spontaneous camping trips in winter are not my favourite.
