yes, wipe off the dip stick and add oil in through the dip stick hole.

You don't mention what year your sled is, but if you have an '06, those "shavings" may be signs that your chain links are failing. Do a search for chain issues as there's a lot here on the topic, but you can start reading here.

Being preseason, I would chage your oil anyway, clean everything out and use the opportunity to really inspect your chain closely. Be meticulous about keeping your chain tensioned throughout the upcoming season as per your manual.
