What type of rear differential do the new Mavericks/Defenders have, can you lock or unlock it? I realize there are many different models.

Rear diff on a x3 mav is always locked. Front diff has a locker to select depending on need. Not sure if the defender models are the same or not..

On my Defender (Mossy Oak w/Smart-Lok) both the front and rear are completely lockable.

The ones with Visco-Lok have a lockable rear diff and a standard VL QE front.

I will admit, for my normal usage, I kind of like VL over Smart-Lok. I know Smart-Lok is supposed to be a better system, I have yet to see an advantage for the way I use it. I have noticed a few times the FWD part fought me a little with Smart-Lok. Never had that with VL.

Correct - well, correct when you put it in full lock. For how I ride I still like VL better.

Smart-Lok doesn't completely unlock one wheel when turning like VL does.

Not a big deal, only noticable at lower speeds too. Certainly not a deal breaker either way.
