Bulkhead strengthening… what to do??

1234 Views 17 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  m_santwire
So help me out here peeps. I'm going to have my motor out and so now may be the time to add a few parts or pieces to strengthen up my REV. Any suggestions as to what to add. My sled is a 2005 Summit Adrenaline 800 151" I know what I'm going to do for my running boards so my question is more directed to the bulkhead and NUN area. I ride the mountains and so, smaller cornices, stumps and rock jumps is a regular part of my diet, plus the trails out here can be brutal with moguls so I think the front end could use a lil' help. Any help a person can lend would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Brent

Give me your email and I will send you the part of the bulliten that you need for the kit you needed to put in.
dooguy thanks for the info...

One thing I'm curious on is the 440 motor plate assy (for lack of a better term...) I noticed it has 2 rods linking the motor mounts together and a bracket underneath the motor plate. I was wondering who has done this and if they felt it really help strengthen things up. It looks like it would to me but I have no first hand knowledge..

thanks again.

I put one in last season. I can’t say if it improved performance, but it has to help keep things lined up. It is a bit of a bear to install the new mounts in the plate. Maybe Irondog has some hints on this since he just finished one. I just remember it was a pain.

Here is the brace I used, It's a peice of tunnle protecter/steffener I had laying around. and I am going to build my own upper nun braces. The local doo shop didnt have them in stock so i will build them myself.

In the last Sledheads MAG they have the MXZ Part# I will check them out and post them for ya later

A pic of the finished right side brace.

Besides adding the additional reinforcement is there anything else that can be added to actually protect the bulkhead/nun. Will adding a skid plate help? I already crunched one nun and don't want to doo it again.

Thanks for the info guys.

I ordered up the right hand bulkhead stiffener and I think I'll try the 440 style motor plate and crooslink nad then have msantwire make me a left hand bulkhead stiffener. I think I'll just leave the NUN alone and call it the crumple zone...

Skid plates help. Also Specialty Sleds makes a left side protector that's basically a plate with a rod capped with resin presses bewteen the Nun and the block. Very effective from first hand experience and keeps the clutches aligned better under torque.

Have FUN!

Idahoo has a point there. Don't just use an aluminum pop can for a doubler. The best and cheapest source of tough aluminum is an old sled. Cut it up and they make great material for strength.

The brace shown installed, on the right side behind the muffler, is not going to doo any good as it is in the wrong spot. Skidoo has a doubler just above it running horizontal. That is where the structure bends outward, and where a stiffener is needed.
I also use a torque plate it bolts to the nun using the bolts that mount the sway bar and Bolts to the motor where the starter would be with a vibration dampener in between. I believe I got it from Starting Line Products

.083 is the thickness of the REV'S NUN

Nun Braces are as thick or thicker the Doo (MXZ-X Part#518324107) and 6061 air craft aluminum is defiantly not a (POP CAN)

I disagree that brace is going work I put it that way for a reason its goes and is bolted the where the bulk head / tunnel are riveted to gether and braced up against the chain case mount where it is bolted on the bottom.
