Please help us find a suitable 2 up snowmobile.
We live on the lake so thousands of trail miles are here to enjoy.

Last year we purchased a 2004 Polaris 700 Classic, with jack seat and upgraded rear suspension, for local trail riding/lake crossing and the likes. Great little ride but not quite there for 2.
Over the summer I purchased and completely overhauled a 98 Ski Doo Grand Touring 700 SE triple triple triple thinking it would be a suitable upgrade for us. It is an amazing machine .. super comfy ... amazing power with all the creature comforts you'd want/expect for it's age. However.... we are not so large people and I personally feel like a kid on a full bagged Harley. It is the ultimate definition of sitting "in" a machine compared to the new forward sitting 'on' machine styles now offered. Solo riding is not a problem because I move around and stand a lot but 2 up'ing ..... feels like I can barely see over the dash let alone the super tall windshield... lol..
Early this year I purchased (and overhauled) a 97 Artic Cat ZRT 600 triple triple triple with stock 2 up seat to give it a try... wicked fun solo machine...not bad for 2 if you have short trips like to your fav ice fishing hole.
I love the older style machines having grown up with them and they are killer easy to work on and I typically purchase/overhaul a machine per year for fun and ya... sure.. for a bit of profit.

Soooo..... we'd like to find or build/upgrade a great 'compromise' setup that can solo and 2 up. Something like the last picture??? I think?? maybe?? heck I don't know.. lol
2 or 4 stroke... newer(ish) 2010 or newer but not break the bank.
136 or longer track
most of our trails are relatively flat ( no mountains ) and typically we get anywhere from 2 to 3 feet of snow per riding season.

Oh.... all 3 machines are for sale so........... just say'n..

Alright then.... any advice from those who are in the know please shout my way...

Thanks

J

Look for a 900 ace renegade and you can buy the linq 2 up seat.

SELL all those machines and purchase a new grand touring 2022 or 2023 or spring order a new 2024 with the 900
. My wife and i ordered 2023 its amazing put 6 inch carbides in the middle and a moderate spring set up it handles and rides like a Cadillac its warm and comfy. WE had a 2012 GSX added a 2 up and a few mods rode and handled well but the new one is wayyy better. Prime motor sports in Shawano Wi may have one on the floor. Good luck

I have a 2021 Renegade Enduro 900 ace turbo which I bought specifically for this issue. Girlfriend doesn’t want to ride (yet) her own sled but I sometimes ride alone. I have the two up linq seat. Love the air suspension. Air up when she is riding with me, down when she’s not. The perfect sled, for my situation.

I agree that the renegade is a great option to look at for trail riding. If you do any kind of ice fishing (where you may want to tow a sled) or any off trail riding at all you could also look at the Expedition Sport in a 4-stroke. I have an Expedition SE with the 900 ACE and I love it. It has air ride suspension also and a very comfortable (and spacious) two-up seat with heated hand grips, but it sounds like a WT way more than you need for all the trail riding is sounds like you do, with minimal off trail exploration. The Sport might be a nice balance, but only if you do any off trail riding and/or towing. If not, then the Renegade for sure.
Good luck with your search!

Agree with CHKeesler’s post above. We like our Expedition Sport but keep in mind its higher center of gravity makes it much tippier than the older touring sleds. I do a lot of off trail/making trail and ice fishing when riding solo and it works well for that and is good for cruising when riding two up. I’d planned to buy a used Renegade but none available in western Canada so ordered the Expedition. The 154” track is a beast in slush, so far keeping up fine with SWTs, and much better than the 136” x 1.5” on our Touring Le.

I get what you're saying @cgkeesler ... It's a tough decision mainly because we/I do all sorts of riding. Together we stick to the open trails and lakes but solo I love taking the 98 GT 700 Triple off trail and break some new ones so ya..... a compromise I'll be looking for to say the least.

@UnoMas? we are just outside Toronto so the availability may be better.. The GT certainly is a low rider and I agree that the newer sled so have a taller seat height and ride feel. More dirt bike like..

Hey Buckersled, what’s that last pic? Sounds like you own the ZRT, touring 700, and Polaris. What’s that 1200 pic for?

Based on your budget and intention I’d think that 1200 would be a good solution.

Hey @origYeti .. the 1st 3 sleds are ours (Polaris .. Ski Doo GT.. and the ZRT) with the last as an example of what I thought be be a good compromise..

Today is the 1st time we could ride the 3 back to back.
ZRT.. NO GOOD
POLARIS.. Pretty good but the passenger hand grips are too low and hard to lean as a result.
GT 700.. going to test right now..

We'll updated that ride soon..

Get an Enduro 900 and add the 2-Up Linq Seat. The Enduro lets you adjust the AirRide to accommodate the extra weight by touching a button. I can almost guarantee you will bottom out adding the 2-Up seat and a passenger unless trails are always smooth as glass. That won't happen with the Enduro.

Otherwise you better plan to swap out the stock torsion springs with the big boy springs on an Adrenaline. I know from past experience running with the 2-up seat and a passenger before buying the Enduro.

The Enduro is my favorite sled for versatility.

ok.... so we took all 3 out for a ride today and the unanimous winner it the GT 700 Triple.. I put on my big boy pants and I have to say that it is.... large... roomy... comfy... and pretty darn good. So.... the Artic Cat and Polaris are going to sell. The Ski Doo GT 700 SE will be the ride... for now.. until we can find the recommended sled that everyone has so generously advised and recommended.

All I need to do now is search out and find a good balance of what has been recommended..... oh ya.. here we go..

Awesome @DGZRT .... thanks for the insight..

as a side note question regarding insurance premium.... in Canada if you don't mind.
I've been told that insurance premiums are elevated when the displacement is over 900cc.... have any of you found this to be true?

Tanks and thanks...

J
Not sure about Canada but I know some insurers will base the premiums off of the CCs while some use the purchase price or value of the sled. You’d have to check specifically with your insurance before buying. If they go with CCs, then yes, a 900 or 1200 would cost more than a 600 for sure.

As for your question about 2-smoke vs. 4-stroke, yes, the 4-stroke sleds are a good bit heavier (as you said) but are fantastic if you do mostly trail riding. The 900 ACE is a great engine for a mainly 2-up trail sled, but it is heavy.
As I mentioned earlier, I have an Expedition SE (20” WT) with a 900 ACE. It is veeeery heavy (over 700 lbs. with fuel and accessories) but it is an absolute beast off trail and very hard to get stuck, and it has all kinds of low end snap and torque. It does lose out on top end speed though (for some trail riders, not me here in Alaska) and so some guys will go with the Turbo or Turbo R. In a Renegade, Enduro or other trail sled, the 900 ACE would be more than enough, IMHO.

Thanks @DGZRT .. Knowing a specific year is very advantageous .... nice

So I've experienced, appreciated (and love) the 2-stroke to 4-stroke transition in moto cross and dual sport/adventure classes. The new 4-stroke motors are beasts to say the least ..... but I have no experience in the snowmobile world so..... are they heavier? in a noticeable way? I'm sure the power is unmatched,,, clean and fuel economic but do they push the front end because of the extra weight up front?...
We'd ,,,,, well,,, my sweetie would appreciate... me I'm kind of a big fan of the 2-stroke smell... the clean burning, fuel economy benefits of a 4-stroke sled but to be honest.... I've never had the chance to ride one.
Yup.... any advice on this aspect of sledding would certainly be valued...

I ride a renegade two up quite often. I think the spring order quick adjustment is better than the air shock of the gsx/enduro, if for no other reason than you don’t have to worry about failure. I’m happy going two up with my adult sized 9 year old but without experience two up on other sleds, I really cannot it’s the best.

The 2 up linq seat is nice. We had the early version on a 04 GSX 600 ho. It worked well and the newer versions are much better.
My buddy had the same 2 up sled as yours and the 700 triple, triple is a runner. His sled would trade wins on the lake against my good running 01 MXZ 700.
The 900 is a nice motor. But is not even close to the performance of your 700. We replaced our 900 with a 2 stroke 600R. Performance wise the 600R is lighter and performs better in every way.
Just do yourself a favor test drive one if you get a chance. Good luck
