23 Renegade XRS 850, 2180 miles. ocassionally when cruising it sounds and feels like the track hits an ice patch and spins for a second. It never does it when accelerating from a dead stop, only when already moving usually at 70 mph or higher. The closest thing to a pattern I can see is that Im cruising at high speed, let off the throttle for a curve, get back on the throttle and thats when it seems to happen. If I let off the throttle it stops and might do it a few minutes later or might not do it the rest of the day. Also seems to run at higher engine temp when its doing it frequently. I've been riding over 40 years and never had a sled do this. Sounds like belt is slipping. Anyone else experience this?

I think we might need a few more details.
  • stock clutching
  • last time cleaned clutch
  • miles on belt
  • "how much abuse on belt"
  • Is there any dark lines on primary or secondary clutch faces to indicate slipping/burning of belt
  • what gearing you running
  • snow conditions before - during - after you feel this
  • RPM change on dash
  • Does it surge or just feel a pickup/drop

I am sure there is more but just trying to vet this out a little, it could even be bad gas, dirty filter, fuel pressure, dirty injector.. change in timing from temp sensor or knock.

sled is completely stock, 2180 miles on belt, never cleaned clutch, no lines on clutch, did it on all different snow conditions, I did not look at tach when it happened, as soon as I felt/heard it I immediately let off the the throttle, and I didnt feel anything I would call a "surge", it mostly felt like when youre on the throttle and your track hits an icy patch and slips for s second, but it did also sound like it was coming from the belt area. Belt is approx 1/8" over top of secondary, and I've tightened drive chain twice, no slack in it. It did it twice in Canada a few weeks ago, then last week I was in Maine and it did it a lot more. 1 day it was doing it pretty consistently then the next day didnt do it at all. Ive always had 600's and never felt this, plus Im used to getting 3500-4000 miles out of a belt. If this is an 850 thing and theres something I need to do I'd like to know, but dealer hasnt said anything

I have experienced the exact same thing on two different 850's Always happens when the sled has been run for awhile and at higher speeds. Just like you said... Let off the gas... get back on it and the belt slips. (at least that's what I think it is) Happened on my 18' and just experienced the same thing on my 23' Blizzard.

Does this feel like the sled goes into almost a free revving neutral? kind of like you pushed the clutch in on a standard transmission? I am not sure how this would happen in a primary p drive clutch. are the clutch faces all marked up like a belt was slipping? Do you guys think it could it be the track drivers skipping while under power over bumps with a track lose? what is actually happening?

No it doesnt feel like its free revving. track tension is good. One of the first things I thought was the drive sprockets were slipping on the shaft, but they are tight and theres zero evidence of that happening. Im really thinking its the drive belt slipping its just so random when it does it and never ever from a dead stop

Is it possible the engine is just experiencing a massive flat spot recovering from hard pull to off throttle and back on to throttle it goes into a big dip? if it's truly the clutches or belt slipping from back shifting that means stock clutching is not too good. does it want more driven spring pressure? more helix or less helix angle? somethings off

Try cleaning your clutches or cleaning them and changing the belt.

Being a '23 I'm thinking you have the 571 belt - they are wicked filthy. You very easily could be slipping for a second.

Anyone use a Timken XS belt? My buddy with a Thundercat swears by them. I've pretty much always used Doo oil and belts and never had any issues with any of my sleds, but I've also always run 600's

It is random but always when the sled is hot. On my 18' we rode from Copper Harbor to Lake Gogebic without stopping. (only once for gas) By the time I hit Gogebic it was doing it pretty bad. Stopped at the Root Cellar and the clutches were crazy hot and the belt was very pliable from the heat. I'm almost certain its belt slippage from clutch heat. Like the belt becomes rubbery and greasy maybe? Once the sled cools down its back to normal and all is good.

This is the exact same thing that is happen to me 6 times yesterday and twice today all at around 75-80mph….I’m running the stock belt it came with…and I’ve got 3200 miles. Feels like someone grabbed my brake for 1/2 a second.. please any insight would help. 3 more days on our trip then back to the dealer again…

I've run them since my '14 1200.

Every sled I've ever put one on performed better with it - and I used to be a Doo belts only guy.

XS821 will solve any slipping you might have, but clean the clutches first with scotch bright and methanol.
I was slipping my BRP belt in a 900ACE NA in the exact same conditions as you when I changed to the XS the slipping stopped and much more constant clutching with it.
The only drawback is that it pulls the RPM's down 200 at the top end.

Yesterday……..I’m going to break in a new XTX belt as we speak and I’ll report back….tomorrow!

Today….zero issues but I was in lots of fresh snow. I think as posted above this is a belt slippage issue or a clutch heat issue. I’ve owned 3 different 850s since 2019 never had this issue…and it did pull down my rpm100-200.

I don't know about the XTX belt but the XS will help you, so would a Gates carbon.

By the way the XTX is NOT recommended for a 850 or any thing above 120hp's
From what I know of the XTX is is just a regular belt, it will not help if you have slippage, you are just going for a cheaper version.

I know the XS821 is expensive but it works.
