swapped mine out 4 or 5 years ago, went with radial 13's
Pulls like a new trailer, tracks way better. tire wear is almost non existent, best thing I ever did fir the trailer.
Recommend it!

 

If you are going to swap them out anyway... go as big as you can and still have clearance. It will ride better, wear better, less bearing stress... and the best part! you can stop thinking about those little donuts back there do doing 150mph and enjoy the trip.

 

Great Idea.. Did my trailer a few years ago. Some trailers will require you to add shims or spacers to have proper clearance between tire tread and deck. Just be sure to check that.. Good Luck!!

 

I did the same thing. Welded a piece of 4" 1/4" wall tubing to the frame and welded new hanger to that to gain clearance.

 

I put tall skinnies on this old jelopy. Can't remember if they're 13's or 12's but either way they are taller than the short fatties. Only drawback is it raised the deck up quite a bit so it's pretty steep loading up but haven't had any problems getting the sleds on or off.

I have an extra hitch that I have reversed - instead of a 2" drop, it's a 2" raise. I made the switch to 13" tires last fall. I was replacing the axle anyways, so I added a 2" spacer with the new axle & switched to 13" tires. My trailer pulls much nicer, no more vibration from the out of balance 10" tires - which always drove me nuts. It also gets things up - out of the sloop & spray , the only drawback is the ramp gets a bit steep. I don't have a problem loading myself, but friends that load their sleds on my trailer have struggled at times.

I never used it with the short fatties. This trailer was left at my shop with a broken axle, came in on a flatbed tow truck. Some poor guy from down state was up here sledding and snapped the axle, he bought a new trailer and we transferred the clam shell over and his sleds. I put a new axle, springs and those tires on it and made the salt shield. My truck has a little lift so I'm using a 6" drop and it's pretty level.

I prefer skinny tires for trailers. I had a utility trailer that used car tires. In a pinch I put on one of those mini-donut spares. I could tell even swapping 1 tire out make a difference going to a narrower tire. I started keeping an eye out for another.

 

I went from 10" to 8" and it tows way better. They have been shipping these trailers forever with 8" tires so I don't anticipate any problems.

 

Did it (switched) on the boat trailer, seems fine. Snowmobile trailer is twin axle and it has never been an issue (didn't switch).
