Any Body made one of these Homemade Dyno's using Hydraulics?

This DIY Dyno was built for Testing Small Honda/Clone 4 Strokes. To do these Old 12hp to 50hp Sled Engines you just need a bigger Hydraulic Pump and Pressure Gauge. Homemade Dyno, small engine DIY dynamometer.


I put together a homemade small engine Dyno for a DIY build, to tune some kart and mini bike engines. Subscribe to see how I'm breaking it in with futures videos and doing calculation for HP ratings! I've been discussing many things with DIY dyno groups and people with similar machines to get the most accurate break in and test procedure as can find! I will be making minor adjustments as listed in the video, based on what I find to be best!

I'm going to be tuning engines for go karts, race kart engine tuning and mini bikes. I wanted to have a home made dyno that could do about 20 HP. I have not tested the limits yet. Due to how this video took 2 months to source all parts and with "world events" get them to me, I'm putting this up for the how to make a small engine dyno portion. I've still got my Tillotson 212r race engine video to compare to the Predator 212 non hemi engine, but the Tillotson engine is having a few performance issues. It's coming as soon as I can get it up and going. Lots of Corona projects delayed, but they are still on the way!

Total cost for this Small Engine Dyno was $500 plus tax and shipping.

I called a few other places, their dynos cost anywhere from $5000 for a base model without computer graph, to $15,000 with computer print out and all the bels and whistles. I have seen used dyno cost $4,000 for inertia dynos to $8,000 used. Some water brake and hydraulic dynamometers cost $3,000 to $8,000 used.

So basically I'm cheap, and want to tune engines.

1 1/4" x 3/8" carriage bolts with metal locking nuts (*QTY 2*)

You bring up some Good Points. Safety Always, I don't like original Design, Long Chain & Sprocket with No Guard! High PSI Hyd Lines with No Guards. Hyd Line is about he same Price no matter what the PSI rating.So if using 4000psi Pump, use 5000psi Line.

While it might be coinvent to Dyno an Engine in the Sled, it would make it more Expensive and more complicated to make. I would rather use a Sled Clutch & Belt and Pulley.

Myself, 7000rpm is Max I would use, so Plan Hyd Pump Reduction for +250rpm or +500rpm.

The main Things that need Upgraded from original Design is the Hyd Pump, the Hyd Hose to 4000/5000psi, and the Hyd Gauge.

Many of these Pumps give (3) PSI Ratings, Normal use, Intermittent Use, and a Max PSI!

I made up this Chart on some Hyd Pumps off eBay. This 28gpm Pump should cover many engines.

You don't want a Hyd Line breaking and Spraying Hyd Fluid on a Hot Engine.

I don't think so! That 30.39 gpm is rated 3600psi@3600rpm = 63.8hp vs your Hyd Pump is rated 30.9 gpm at 2900psi@2000rpm = 52.2hp!

Here is another slightly bigger than the 30.39 Hyd Pump at 33.42 GPM 3650psi HYD PUMP $294 AMAZON. At 3650psi is good for 71.1hp! Could you run it up on a Dyno to 4000psi for 2-4 Seconds, most Dyno Pulls only last 8 -12 Seconds total, I think so. Seal rebuild kits about $28.

Max hp@6500rpm to shoot for if using 11.5cr, Proper Size Carb, with a Tuned Pipe with maybe some Trail Porting!

250F = 246.8cc/7cc = 35.2hp! 247cc at 93% VE using 1.5 = 35hp and makes 53cfm/1.8 = 29.4hp!

277F = 268.6cc/7cc = 38.4hp!

292F = 291.6cc/7cc = 41.6hp!

299F = 299.5cc/7cc = 42.7hp!

318F = 317.6cc/7cc = 45.3hp!

335F = 334.6cc/7cc = 47.8hp!

377F = 368.4cc/7cc = 52.6hp!

440F = 436.7cc/7cc = 62.3hp!

503F = 496.9cc/7cc = 70.9hp! <--- For me, 75hp is probably all I would be interested in.

550F = 553.6cc/7cc = 79.0hp!

470LC/463UL = 463.0cc/7cc = 66.1hp!

Nope - Specs are HYPE of an e-bay seller.
Pumps are normally rated at 2000rpm not 3600rpm for comparison purposes.
He gave GPM at MAX RPM - to make the pump look better than those listed at industry standard 2000rpm rating
Also 3600 psi is for smaller pumps.

1.95 ci -2300psi - 3600rpm - 93%VE
(1.95x3600/231) x 2300 / (1714x0.93) = 43.8HP

You read the specs of the pump I showed incorrectly. 2900psi@2000rpm is the standard comparison format
The MAX RPM is 2800 not 2000
Chief pump GP-F25-60
3.84ci - 2900psi - 2800rpm
(3.84x2800/231)x 2900 / (1714x0.93) = 84.7hp

As I said a few posts ago. - TO AVOID CONFUSION
5) When researching pumps - write down the following information for each pump.
Max RPM,
PSI,
Pump Cubic in or ML per revolution,
GPM @RPM if given,
And Finally PRICE
Use the numbers in the online calculator or a spreadsheet or phone calculator or pencil and paper.
