Adding Clamshell Top to Triton Trailer - Looking for Advice

I currently have a 2016 Triton XT10-101-SQ ( Ten footer with an aluminum Slush guard) and am looking to take the Clam Shell top off My buddy's 2004 Triton 10 foot Triton trailer as he recently upgraded. Based on measuring both trailers, we think it should fit. In fact my trailer appears to have the reinforced plates with pre-drilled holes to accept the hinge assemblies that go on the front of the trailerthat would have a clam shell top. The only difference I can see is the mechanism used to hold the floor of the trailer to the frame seem to be slightly different in design. Both "screw down" to keep the floor and frame together once the sled are loaded, yet my 2016 Triton has a longer threaded screw handle over the much narrower screw handle on my buddy's older Clam Shell Triton trailer...is this a deal breaker? Will this restrict the top from being converted?

After searching this forum, other forums, You tube, general google search and even looking at Triton's own website,I was surprised no information could be found regarding the adding a Clam shell top / converting the top from one trailer to another.

If anybody has done this before or can offer some advice it would be appreciated. I'd like to know what i'm getting into BEFORE I start tearing things apart. I've tried to be as detailed as possible to capture all of the salient points.

Please share your thoughts on this project.

I can't comment on the fit but I can tell you that Triton has an incredibly engineering team who is more that willing to answer your question.

I've dealt with them in the past and their service is "second to none". However, I heard that the plant is shut down right now?

Side note: go with your gut and if the measurements fit it should be a go.

thanks 12/3; That is good advice ( contacting the manufacturer directly) and I can certainly "doo" that , but I was hoping someone in the "DOO" world would have tried this conversion and be able to provide a little insight.

ps I lived in Winnipeg many years ago and got bought sleds for both my wife and I while out there. Sledded in Gimli , the interlake and Kenora - I hope Manitoba's trail system has matured /expanded since I was out there ( 20 years ago)

Maybe i misunderstood, but if your buddy upgraded, why not just take his trailer and sell yours? Curious

I would think they should swap just fine. I had a 2007 10ft and now have a 11ft Triton. Both were clamshells and both mounted the same and used the same supports. Width was the same on both trailers so swapping a 10ft to a 10ft should work. Triton doesn't build the clamshells for each specific trailer its an add on you can order and the only difference is the length.

Not many people will admit that they are from Winnipeg. LOL

12,000 KM's of trails in the province. The Whiteshell is the hidden jewel for great riding and scenery. We have a cottage there so it makes for some great weekends, still enjoy visiting other trail systems too especially South of the 49th.

Thanks to all who posted replies , that is why this forum so great - I appreciate that many of you think it should fit and after my own assessment I tended to agree.. in particular, I took the advice of one poster and called Triton who where more than eager to assist rather then sell me a new trailer.(refreshing these days)!

The quick answer is YES the clam shell will fit ... you guys were right! All Triton 10 foot sled trailers are all built the same they just have different "add on " accessories, one of which is a clam shell top.

They told me the conversion should only take a couple hours, with the biggest challenge being the removal of the bolts that house the hinge assemblies. With the old trailer being a 2004 there is 15 years to crud in those treads and they wouldn't be surprised if i had to cut them off and need to order replacements. I've began blasting them with penetrating oil and will let that sink in for a while , then get a hold of my brother's impact gun/ratchet if things get nasty.

I look forward to this project now that the season is over and we have to self - isolate > a good project to keep me busy.

Thanks everyone for your feedback .

Hit the bolts with Liquid wrench or PB Blaster....repeat like you are doing and they should come off.....if not they will snap and may be fine too. Only drawback to snapping these bolts is it puts pressure on the thin aluminum cover and may damage it.

It would make sense to replace with stainless hardware BUT DON'T as you will get galvanic corrosion in time. One solution would be to use a plastic washer in between the stainless and aluminum or just stick with a plated bolt.

Thanks again 12/3 - I never thought about the chemical reaction that will take place ( as stainless hardware would have been my replacement material of choice). If the original hardware does break the plastic washer is a great idea to separate the two metals.

PS . knowing the area I hope you are a resident of Stonewall and not an inmate!!!
