99 MXZ 500 Hard Start

its hard to start.
you need to give it throttle to get it to start.

if you use the primer, it doesnt make it any easier to start, it actually makes it harder... and i can see the fuel being primed into the carb.

any ideas?

When cold give only 3 to 4 pumps on the primer any more and it will flood. Then pull with your left hand and give throttle with your right. Keep opening and closing the throttle a small amount while pulling until started. Once started it will idle back down quick then give it another quick pump of the primer and it will rev back up again and do this until it idles fine. Also when these sleds are warm you still need to give them gas when you start them.

yea, i've gave anywhere from 1-4 pumps of primer.
doesnt even try to start when i do.
only starts with giving it 1/4 to 1/2 throttle.

i am firmilar with snowmobiles.
im just looking for any weak spots or spots to check on the machine that could be casuing it not to start.... like maybe the rave valves? etc. carburator adjustments...
maybe a carb page showing where all the adjustment screws are specifically.

Did you clean the carbs?. Clean the jets ,sounds like your poilits are pluged.
Those are cold blooded mills but 2-3 primes and a couple of burbs and it should stay running and idle.
Pull the plugs and turn it over a few times to get some of the fuel to dry up if the plugs are wet?.

If your getting it to fire by only giving it throttle and then dies and the plugs are wet ,your poilits are gunked up. A plugged poilit jet or air adjusment will cause hard starting when warm. ether have a flooding or starving issue in the poilit circut. The reason why it fires when the throttle is cracked ..is its getting fuel from the main jet(poilit clogged) or opening slide up to pull more air in to make the right air to fuel mix to fire from being flooded.

mutt
thanks, your reasoning makes perfect sense.

ill get the carbs off tomarrow....
gonna get those carbs off today and see what i got.
well all i did was adjust the pilot air screws out on each carb, and

now no need to give it throttle to start.
if i hit the primer once, while its running, it will stall the machine....

or while its not running, one shot on the primer and its flooded for acouple pulls and you need to give it gas to get it started again... from here on out its going to be no primer useage for me unless i can figure this out...

on my 98 formula Z 670 the primer works great and helps start the machine up right away... on the 99 MXZ 500, totally not worth it to even think about using the primer...

any advice ?

Sounds like you have a rich condition. Needles and seats may be leaking and need replaced. Floats maybe out of adjustment. Maybe the primer is bad and needs replaced. Trying using BR9EYA spark plugs.
whats the difference from that plug from a br9es?

and do you think my oil injection system could be flowing too much?
I found the BR9EYA too be less sensitive too rich conditions. Although a rich gas or oil problem needs to be found and repaired.

Yes the oil adjustment could possibly be out of whack. Check the repair manual for settings.
time for me to buy a shop manual for this damm'd sled then eh?

i need the carb tuning specs also... those would be in the manual i take it?

anyone know where this manual is posted online? or in PDF format?
I have the same sled. It took me awhile to get used to it. When Its cold I prime it 3pumps then pull with my
left hand on the throttle acouple of times...wont start most of the time so I hit the primmer 1 more time pull with throttle in and bingo. When warm Prime it once and pull with throttle in and she starts right up. took me a while to figure out what she need and did not need. From what i hear these 99 mxz 500 are all the same

Specs and repair will be in a repair manual. Not sure where a guy can get them online in a PDF.
I bought a CD from "The Wayniac" on here. It has everything.
sweet, ill pm him.
thanks.

I drained the gas tank, added a bottle of 'iso-heet' and 5 gallons of premium. After that started up first pull... wierd.

does anyone know if you hang the sled from rear grab bar at about a 45degree angle for 8 hours.... would that effect the starting of the sled? by flooding it somehow?
