Hey all. Looking for some advice before I jump into this.

Just bought a 98 formula Z 583 (2400 miles) and got an awesome price on her.
However, now i get to pay the real price after I killed the engine.

Appently he (previous owner) jetted it, cuz one piston (right side)
is coming up and slapping the spark plug. Plug was nice and white
too, so it must be lean as hell.

Boy am I kickin myself in the a$$ for not checking !

So, before I tare it down, i'm assuming I'm looking at a crank, piston possibly
(just a couple scratches on the top), and a Rod.

Anyway, does anyone have some good do's and don'ts, where to get parts,
and how much am I looking at. I've rebuilt plenty of car engines, but this
will be my first 2 stroke.

Thanks

So, I did some searching on dKirk and RD and see nothing about cranks
for sale. Does that give me hope that nothing is wrong w/ the crankshaft....perhaps just the rod(which I don't see for sale anywhere either) ?

Secondly, If I have to replace the piston, should I do both sides even though
the left side is in great shape?

I'm going to start taring it down tomorrow.

Meanwhile my 96 mxz 583 with 7900 miles is going strong w/ no engine work
ever done. *sigh*

Thanks for the sites guys

well here's the damage.

sooooo lucky, nothing seemed to make it to the crank.

due to lack / no oil it looks like the piston had a bad day.

So, I guess i'm looking at piston, head, and honed jug.

Should I do both now is the question. The other side is fine.

If you just burned up a piston there should be no problem with your crank or rod! My Piston went in mine last fall and I just got a new one and replaced it. The cylinder was ok and it just needed to be honed out. BUT... you should find out why it burned up!!! Check the jetting and the throttle cable for the injection line. Oh unless you have a wrong plug in , theres no way the piston should hit it!!

Yeah, I'm almost positive that jetting is the issue.

As far as the plug being hit, it was debris from the piston detonating.

So a head, cylindar honing, and a piston and i'll be good to go.

Just sucks about the head, otherwise it was going to be a reasonably
priced fix.

I'm still going to tare into the bottom end to make sure no metal
snuck its way in there.

I'll drop a pic of the damage here in a second.

I'm pretty sure they are OEM....unless the previous owned has something
hiding from me. Perhaps you will know by checking the pic.

I have a piston for you, It's an aftermarket. Piston, rings, wrist pin and clips. It was put in an engine and ran only for mock up. 0 miles. $30.00 and shipping it's yours. BTW it's for a STD bore.

So here's an update....

Looks like the PTO / MAG jets are suppose to be
280 / 260

I just checked them and they are 250 / 250

Which is weird cuz the mag side is my damaged side.
I gotta double check and make sure I read it right and it wasn't 220
or something stupid like that.

Any thoughts ?

Okay, so yesterday and today was project day.

I pulled the jugs and it's clear that none of the damage made it's
way to the crank. sooooo lucky.
All the metal from the torched piston added to the cylindar wall, so I lightly
chipped away w/ a dull screwdriver and tack hammer.
Then honed out the jug and am still by far within the service manual specs
for OEM pistons. WOOO HOOO

It's looking like the mag side of my oiler was plugged...otherwise everything
looked fine.

Fired it up today and locked the oiler into a full throttle position and idled it
for a few minutes until warm.
Everything is looking great !

Thanks to the people here, I ended up buying a piston and a couple gaskets.
Instead of a new head.
Thanks again.
