Make sure it's had the updates done, especailly the wiring. If not, do them. Check for wires chafing around the bars and under the engine. If those are ok, could be the dreaded stator...
Ok, Here is what i found with my 98 mach z, i checked all usual stuff wiring under the engine, and around under the hood as mine was doing the same thing as yours. now when i removed my handlebar padding, i found that the wiring was run outside of the wire tamer (the metal loop on the steering shaft) and had gotten pinched between the stops on the shaft, thus a short. it is a pain in the arse to fix too. what i ended up doing was to route what connectors i could through the loop where they belonged and others i had to cut splice and rerout through the loop, then solder, and than heatshrink, the heatshrink is very important cause electrical tape will deteriorate and you do it all over again
that was the fix to my mach z headache. she works flawless now.
